Chapter 26 - Return to the Windy City

The private jet touched down at O'Hare International Airport under a blanket of heavy, gray Chicago snow. The bitter wind whipped across the tarmac as Clara descended the aircraft stairs, wrapped in a long black cashmere coat, her posture straight and uncompromising. She hadn't set foot in the Windy City since the rainy midnight she fled with her daughters. Back then, she had been a terrified mother escaping a golden cage with nothing but a diaper bag and a prayer. Now, she returned as the apex predator of the financial world, her arrival unannounced, untracked, and devastatingly lethal. Waiting at the private hangar was a convoy of armored black SUVs, flanked by federal marshals and her own private security detail. Marcus Vance opened the door of the lead vehicle, shielding her from the stinging sleet as she climbed inside. "The DOJ strike force is ready at the Dirksen Federal Building," Marcus reported, sealing the heavy door against the storm. "The sealed indictments for Arthur and Vivienne are already printed. All we need to do is hand over the physical ledgers from the safety deposit box."

Within forty-પણે minutes, the convoy pulled into the subterranean security garage of the federal courthouse. Clara walked through the secure elevators, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor, a sound that felt like an approaching executioner's axe. Up on the twelfth floor, the head of the DOJ’s financial crimes division, Special Agent David Vance (no relation to Marcus), stood waiting in his private office alongside two federal prosecutors. He looked at the heavy metal briefcase Clara placed on his desk with a mixture of awe and profound gravity. "Mrs. Miller," the agent said, his voice dropping to a low register as he unlatched the briefcase to reveal rows of pristine, waterproofed ledgers and encrypted thumb drives. "If these documents are authentic, this isn't just a civil custody dispute anymore. This is a RICO case that will sweep up half the banking elite in Zurich and Chicago." Clara sat down in the visitor's chair, crossing her legs calmly as she accepted a cup of black coffee from Marcus. "They aren't just authentic, Agent Vance," Clara replied, her voice smooth and devoid of mercy. "Every signature, every account number, and every illicit kickback is meticulously cataloged. My ex-husband wanted a global courtroom battle to strip me of everything I built? Let’s give him a federal indictment instead."
