Chapter 5 - Freezing the Empire

By 5:00 PM that evening, the video from St. David’s Medical Center had become the most viral piece of media in the United States.
It was playing on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and trending at number one across every social media platform under the hashtag **#TheVanceBetrayal**. Public outrage was instantaneous, deafening, and absolute.
Julian and Eleanor had fled the Omni Hotel through the subterranean kitchen loading dock, pursued by paparazzi on motorcycles.
They took refuge at Eleanor’s private estate in Tarrytown—a fortress-like mansion behind ten-foot brick walls—where Nora was already waiting in a state of hysterical meltdown.
Inside Eleanor’s marble-floored living room, the scene was one of utter chaos.
"You said she was weak!" Nora screamed at Julian, pacing back and forth across a Persian rug, her phone buzzing non-stop in her hand. "You told me she was an emotional wreck! She released that video to the entire country, Julian! My name is everywhere! My face is on the national news! My father just called from Houston—he told me I’m completely disowned!"
"Shut up, Nora!" Julian bellowed, his suit jacket discarded on the floor, his tie undone, clutching a tumbler of neat bourbon with shaking hands. "Just shut the hell up! Do you think I planned for Hayes to walk into my press conference with hospital security footage?!"
"You should have known!" Eleanor shrieked from the velvet armchair, her face blotchy from crying. "You are supposed to be the head of this family, Julian! You told us Evelyn was handled! Now look at us! The country club just revoked my lifetime membership over the phone! The charity board removed me as chairwoman! They called me a child trafficker!"
"Enough!" Julian roared, smashing his glass into the limestone fireplace. Shards of crystal and amber liquid exploded across the hearth.
Silence descended upon the room, broken only by Nora’s ragged sniffing.
Julian ran both hands through his hair, pacing like a caged animal. "We still have the assets. We still have the money. Evelyn can play her media games, but Vance Development holds three hundred million dollars in prime real estate. I control the board. I control the voting stock."
"Do you?" Nora asked, her voice shaking with terrifying doubt.
Julian pulled out his phone and dialed his chief financial officer, Thomas Sterling. He put it on speakerphone.
The line clicked. "Julian?" Sterling’s voice sounded ancient, breathless, and terrified.
"Thomas," Julian said, trying to regain his commanding executive tone. "I need you to liquidate our liquid reserves in the Austin Riverfront fund immediately. Wire twenty million to our corporate treasury account at Frost Bank. We need to retain Williams & Connolly out of DC to handle this PR and legal mess."
There was a long, excruciating pause on the other end of the line.
"Thomas?" Julian demanded. "Did you hear me?"
"Julian... where have you been for the last three hours?" Sterling whispered.
A cold dread coiled in the pit of Julian’s stomach. "What are you talking about?"
"The bank rejected the wire," Sterling said. "All of them."
"What do you mean, *all of them*?!"
"Frost Bank received a federal injunction at 3:15 PM," Sterling explained, paper shuffling frantically on his desk. "Evelyn’s name wasn't just on the operating agreement, Julian. She was the sole managing guarantor of the master credit facility with JPMorgan and Frost Bank. She triggered the 'Adverse Material Change' clause the second you diverted that two hundred thousand dollars to her trust account yesterday."
Julian felt the room spinning. "What does that mean, Thomas? Speak plain English!"
"It means the banks have called the notes, Julian!" Sterling shouted into the phone. "Every single construction loan across all twelve commercial projects has been accelerated! They’re demanding full repayment of ninety-two million dollars within forty-eight hours! And because the accounts are flagged for forensic investigation by the SEC regarding your Nevis shell company, the banks have frozen every single dollar in corporate liquidity!"
Nora gasped, dropping her latte onto the floor.
"That's impossible," Julian stammered, his knuckles turning white as he clutched the phone. "I am the CEO! I have fifty-one percent of the voting equity!"
"You had fifty-one percent of the Vance Holding Trust, Julian," Sterling corrected him, his voice trembling. "Evelyn audited the trust structure six months ago. She discovered that Eleanor’s initial transfer of family shares into your name back in 2019 was never formally ratified by the board of trustees because Eleanor forgot to file the state tax certificates. Evelyn filed the ratification challenge last week. As of this morning, your voting shares are locked in an administrative deep freeze."
"No," Eleanor gasped, clutching her heart. "No, that cannot be! Those are Vance family shares!"
"The company is paralyzed, Julian," Sterling said bluntly. "Payroll bounces on Friday for four hundred employees. The general contractors on the Riverfront tower have already walked off the site. There are cement trucks idling on Congress Avenue because the suppliers won't pour without guaranteed cashier’s checks. We are done. We are completely bankrupt by Monday."
The line went dead.
Julian dropped his phone. It hit the hardwood floor with a dull thud.
He slowly turned his head to look at Nora.
Nora wasn't looking at him with adoration anymore. She wasn't leaning into his chest, whispering about their future penthouse overlooking Town Lake.
She was looking at him with sheer disgust and terror. She backed away from him toward the grand entrance hall, clutching her Birkin bag against her chest.
"Where are you going, Nora?" Julian asked, his voice deathly quiet.
"I... I have to go home," Nora stammered, avoiding his gaze. "I need to pack my things."
"Your things?" Julian took a step toward her. "We are in this together, Nora. You helped me draft that agreement! You set up the Nevis account! You told me this was how we’d cut Evelyn out!"
"I was just your assistant!" Nora cried out defensively, her voice echoing through the massive foyer. "You were the CEO! You signed the wires! I never forced you to do anything, Julian! I'm not going to prison for you!"
"You selfish little viper!" Eleanor screamed, lunging out of her armchair toward Nora with her manicured nails bared. "You seduced my son! You destroyed our family name! You convinced him to push Evelyn out before the Riverfront deal closed!"
"Get away from me, you crazy old bat!" Nora screamed back, dodging Eleanor’s grasping hands and bolting through the front door into the humid Texas evening.
Julian didn't chase her.
May you like
He stood alone in the center of the vast, echoing foyer, surrounded by the towering limestone walls of the empire his wife had built, realizing for the very first time that he was completely, utterly ruined.
