Chapter 18 - The Shadow in the Crowd

A week later, the pace of my trip had shifted from pure corporate maneuvering to high-society networking events. Tonight was a charity gala hosted at the Petit Palais, a stunning museum filled with neoclassical art and marble statues. As one of the evening's primary benefactors, I was expected to make a grand entrance, and I had no intention of disappointing.
Clara had chosen a midnight-blue velvet gown adorned with subtle diamond threading that caught the light with every movement. My hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, and a simple platinum choker rested against my collarbone. Walking through the grand arched entrance, cameras flashed rapidly, capturing every step. I offered the press a poised, confident smile, completely at home in the spotlight.
As I mingled with dignitaries, art collectors, and fellow CEOs, sipping champagne and discussing the upcoming acquisition of a major European fashion house, a strange sensation washed over me—the distinct feeling of being watched. It wasn't the appreciative gaze of admirers or the calculating look of business rivals. It was heavy, desperate, and malevolent.
I subtly scanned the perimeter of the grand ballroom, letting my eyes drift past the gilded pillars and cascading floral arrangements. Near the secondary exit, half-hidden in the shadow of a towering marble statue of Athena, stood a figure in an ill-fitting suit. Even from a distance, the disheveled posture and frantic expression were unmistakable.
Julian.
How he had managed to secure a counterfeit invitation or sneak past security into an elite, invitation-only gala in Paris was beyond comprehension, but desperation made men do insane things. He looked hollowed out—dark circles bruised beneath his eyes, his hair unkempt, his suit wrinkled as though he had been sleeping in it. He was staring directly at me with a sickening mix of obsession and rage.
I didn't flinch. I didn't call for security immediately. Instead, I calmly raised my champagne flute toward him, offering a cold, knowing smirk that let him know *he* was the pathetic spectacle, not me.
Seeing my reaction snap whatever fragile thread of sanity he had left, Julian took a sudden, aggressive step forward, shoving past a waiter carrying a tray of canapés. The tray crashed to the floor with a loud, metallic clatter, drawing the startled attention of everyone nearby.
"Emily!" Julian roared across the opulent hall, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, shattering the refined atmosphere of the gala in an instant. "You can't just pretend I don't exist! You ruined my life!"
Instantly, two burly private security guards materialized from the shadows, pinning Julian's arms behind his back before he could take another step toward me.
"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Julian shrieked, kicking and thrashing as the guards dragged him toward the exit. "Emily, tell them! Tell them who I am!"
I took a slow sip of my champagne, my gaze unwavering as I looked him dead in the eye.
May you like
"Oh, I know exactly who you are, Julian," I said clearly enough for the surrounding guests to hear, my voice dripping with icy disdain. "A trespasser. Remove him from the premises."
