Chapter 20 - The Unseen Observer

With Julian safely detained and the Parisian legal machinery quietly taking care of the nuisance, my schedule resumed its blistering, exhilarating pace. Two days later, I was seated in a sunlit, high-tech boardroom overlooking the sleek financial district of La Défense, finalizing the acquisition of a cutting-edge European green-tech startup.

The CEO of the startup, a brilliant engineer named Lucas Vance, slid the final contract across the polished oak table. "Well, Ms. Carter, it official. With your capital and our technology, we are going to reshape the entire sustainable energy market across three continents."

"Let's change the world, Lucas," I said, shaking his hand firmly as camera shutters clicked, capturing the historic partnership for the financial press.

Later that afternoon, I decided to take a quiet walk along the banks of the Seine, letting the gentle breeze clear my mind before my evening flight back to New York. The river shimmered under the late afternoon sun, reflecting the timeless beauty of the bridges and historic buildings. Clara walked a discreet few paces behind me, giving me space to breathe and absorb the magnitude of everything I had built.

As I paused by the stone parapet, watching a tourist boat glide leisurely down the water, my phone buzzed in my coat pocket. Expecting a routine message from my legal team regarding Julian's deportation, I pulled it out and tapped the screen.

It wasn't an email from Clara or my lawyers. It was an alert from an encrypted security monitoring app I had installed to keep tabs on my former estate back in America—the very mansion Julian and his mother had lost to foreclosure.

The notification showed live security footage from the front gates of the estate, which had recently been purchased by an anonymous high-bidder during the bank liquidation auction. For weeks, the property had sat empty, a decaying monument to greed and arrogance. But on the screen, the iron gates were slowly swinging open.

A sleek, matte-black armored vehicle rolled up the private driveway, stopping directly in front of the grand double doors. The screen zoomed in as the passenger door opened, and a pair of polished black leather shoes stepped out onto the pristine stone steps. A man in an immaculate, bespoke charcoal suit emerged, adjusting his cuffs before looking directly up at the security camera lens with a cold, enigmatic smile, as if he knew I was watching from thousands of miles away.

My breath caught in my throat. I didn't recognize the man, but the sheer, suffocating aura of calculated dominance radiating from his posture sent a sudden, electric shiver straight down my spine.

Who had bought the estate? And more importantly... why did he look like he was coming for *me*?
