Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING

The courtroom of Judge Arthur Sterling was packed to capacity when the final custody and asset settlement hearing began in late November.
By then, the house of cards Michael Bennett had built had completely collapsed.
The court-supervised receiver's audit of Bennett Construction Supply revealed staggering financial irregularities. Michael had not only funneled millions into offshore accounts and shell companies for Paige Henderson, but he had also falsified corporate tax filings to hide the embezzlement—a federal offense.
Facing potential criminal indictment and corporate liquidation, Michael’s high-priced legal team had spent the last two weeks desperately trying to negotiate a plea and a settlement.
Michael sat at the defense table, looking twenty pounds lighter, his expensive suit hanging loosely from his stooped shoulders. He hadn't looked at me once since I entered the courtroom.
Paige Henderson was nowhere to be seen. Once the corporate assets were frozen and federal investigators began circling, she had packed her designer bags and vanished back to her hometown in Indiana, leaving Michael to face the music entirely alone.
Judge Sterling adjusted his glasses, scanning the thick pile of documents before him.
“This court has reviewed the forensic accounting reports, the verified paternity test results confirming Mr. Bennett’s biological fatherhood of both children, and the proposed consent decree agreed upon by both parties,” Judge Sterling announced, his deep voice echoing through the quiet courtroom.
He looked up, fixing Michael with a stern, disapproving gaze.
“Mr. Bennett, you attempted to discard your wife of twelve years and your three daughters under the false pretense that they were financial burdens and failures because they did not provide a male heir. Ironically, the court-ordered genetic testing and medical records confirm that your estranged wife, Mrs. Rachel Bennett, is carrying your biological son—born healthy just three weeks ago—while independent verification confirms your financial malfeasance has brought your company to the brink of insolvency.”
Michael bowed his head, his hands clenched tightly in his lap.
“Therefore,” Judge Sterling continued, “the court orders the following decree: Bennett Construction Supply is hereby dissolved and restructured, with seventy percent ownership transferred directly to Rachel Bennett as settlement for marital assets, unpaid support, and corporate fraud restitution. The family estate in Columbus is deeded solely to Mrs. Bennett and her four children. Furthermore, Mr. Bennett is ordered to pay monthly child support and spousal maintenance, subject to wage garnishment pending his federal tax proceedings.”
The gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack.
