Chapter 18 - THE SUNSET PROMISE

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the western sky in breathtaking strokes of amber, violet, and deep rose.

The park was beginning to empty out as families packed up their bags and headed home for dinner. The evening air grew crisp, carrying the comforting scent of woodsmoke and blooming spring flowers.

Lily came running across the grass toward me, her arms outstretched, her face flushed with happy exhaustion.

“Mommy! Look how high I can climb now!” she cheered, throwing her arms around my waist.

I scooped her up effortlessly, swinging her around in a wide circle as she shrieked with delighted laughter. I pressed a long, tender kiss against the top of her soft, brown hair, breathing in the sweet scent of shampoo and sunshine.

“You can climb as high as you want, baby girl,” I whispered against her ear, my voice thick with emotion. “Nothing is ever going to hold you back. And nobody is ever, ever going to hurt you again. Mommy promises.”

Lily rested her head sleepily against my shoulder, her little hand patting my cheek with gentle reassurance.

“I know, Mommy,” she murmured softly. “Because you’re the strongest mommy in the whole wide world.”

We walked slowly down the sidewalk toward our apartment building, hand in hand, stepping into the warm glow of the streetlights as they flickered on one by one against the deepening twilight.
