Chapter 20 - HAPPILY EVER AFTER

Later that night, after Lily had finished her dinner, brushed her teeth, and drifted off to a deep, peaceful sleep in her own little bed with her favorite stuffed rabbit tucked securely under her arm, I walked into the living room.

I stood by the large bay window, looking out over the quiet, tree-lined street below. The city lights twinkled in the distance like a sea of fallen stars, beautiful and endless.

I held a mug of hot chamomile tea between my hands, letting the warmth seep into my palms.

I thought about where we had been six months ago—cowering in a cold hospital room, running from federal agents, listening to my mother beg me to sacrifice my life for a criminal sister who had broken my four-year-old child's arm. It felt like a lifetime ago, played out in black and white while my real life was unfolding in vibrant, technicolor relief right here in the present.

I had lost parents who never truly loved me. I had lost a sister who was consumed by her own greed and malice.

But in exchange, I had gained something far more precious: my freedom, my dignity, my career, and most importantly, an unbreakable, sacred bond with my daughter.

I walked back into Lily’s bedroom, stepping softly across the wooden floorboards. I stood beside her small bed, gently pulling the floral quilt up over her shoulders as she sighed softly in her sleep, her little face relaxed and serene.

I leaned down, pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, and whispered into the quiet dark:

May you like

“We made it, baby. We’re home.”

And for the first time in my life, I knew with absolute certainty that everything was going to be okay.
