Chapter 18 - The Solstice Alignment

The winter solstice arrived with crisp, sub-zero temperatures and a sky so brilliantly clear that every star in the Milky Way seemed to burn with diamond-like intensity.

Following our new annual tradition, we hosted an intimate winter solstice gathering in our loft. Our guests were the people who truly mattered: David Sterling, who had become a steadfast pillar of our extended chosen family; Dr. Aris Thorne, representing the university’s scientific community; and several of Riley’s closest friends from her astronomy fellowship.

The loft was filled with the rich aromas of roasted chestnuts, cinnamon, and fresh pastries. Soft acoustic music drifted through the speakers, harmonizing with the gentle clinking of cider glasses.

At precisely 8:00 PM—the exact astronomical peak of the solstice—Riley rolled to the center of the living room, holding a stack of freshly printed commemorative stargazing charts she had designed herself, featuring high-resolution coordinates of Asteroid RileyCampbell.

"To everyone here," Riley announced, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with absolute joy. "Thank you for helping me map out a universe where everyone belongs. Happy winter solstice!"

The room erupted into cheers and applause. David walked over, raising his glass in a silent toast, his eyes shining with unadulterated pride.

Later in the evening, after the guests had departed and the loft grew wonderfully quiet, Riley and I sat together by the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapped in warm blankets, looking out at the endless expanse of the night sky through her high-powered telescope.

"Mom," Riley whispered, her gaze fixed on the glowing eyepiece. "Can you see it? Sector four."

I leaned down, pressing my eye to the rubber-rimmed lens. There, floating peacefully in the vast, silent dark of the cosmos, was a tiny, brilliant point of light—Asteroid RileyCampbell. Moving on its own unwavering orbit, completely free, untouchable, and radiant.

"I see it, baby," I whispered, wrapping my arms tightly around her shoulders. "It's breathtaking."

We sat there together for a long time, watching the stars turn silently overhead, knowing that no matter what storms life might bring in the future, we had built a sanctuary of unconditional love that nothing could ever tear down.
