Chapter 20 - The Infinite Sky

Two and a half years after that fateful Christmas Eve, the holiday season rolled around once more.

The air was crisp, clean, and filled with the gentle magic of winter. Our loft was a sanctuary of warmth, glowing fairy lights, balsam fir, and the quiet, steady hum of stellar maps and scientific journals. There were no toxic expectations, no curated snobbery, no narrow doorways, and no gray-blue envelopes hiding stolen futures.

On Christmas Eve evening, Riley and I decided to keep our tradition simple and entirely our own.

We baked cinnamon rolls, wrapped ourselves in thick woolen blankets by the expansive living room windows, and set up the high-powered telescope to track the winter constellations.

Riley wore her deep emerald-green velvet jacket, her dark curls catching the warm glow of the fairy lights as she adjusted the focus ring on her telescope mount.

"Mom," she said softly, turning her head to look at me with a bright, luminous smile. "Do you remember what I asked you two years ago tonight?"

I smiled, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. "I do, sweetheart. You asked if your chair was ugly, or if you wore the wrong thing."

Riley shook her head, her green eyes reflecting the sparkling starlight through the window. "I'm so glad we walked away that night. Because if we hadn't... I never would have known how big the sky really is."

"Neither would I, baby," I whispered, pulling her into a warm, fierce embrace. "Neither would I."

Later that night, as the clock struck midnight and Christmas Day officially dawned across the sleeping city, we sat side by side, looking out at the infinite expanse of the cosmos. High above us, invisible to the naked eye but burning brightly in the cold vacuum of space, Asteroid RileyCampbell continued its endless, magnificent orbit—a permanent testament to a brilliant mind, an unbreakable spirit, and a mother’s fierce, unyielding love.

We had survived the storm. We had claimed our freedom. And the entire universe was finally ours.
