Chapter 10 - THE GALA APPROACHES

By Friday evening, the legal wheels were officially set in motion. Our attorney, Mr. Jenkins, had filed an emergency petition for a Civil Harassment Restraining Order against both Diane and Melissa, citing the playground incident, the continuous harassment, and the malicious, fraudulent CPS report. The court date was set for the following month, but temporary legal notices had already been dispatched via process server.
Despite the ongoing legal drama, our focus inside the house remained entirely on Ella.
Saturday was the night of the Tri-State Elementary Academic Gala.
The event was held in the grand ballroom of the City Convention Center—a massive, glittering venue filled with crystal chandeliers, elegant round tables, and a large raised stage at the front of the room. Over three hundred people were in attendance, including school superintendents, local business leaders, teachers, and proud families from across the region.
At 6:30 PM, our family arrived at the convention center.
Ella looked like an absolute princess in her deep navy satin dress with a matching white ribbon tied in her hair. Hannah wore an elegant emerald green dress, her long hair styled in neat curls. Eric looked sharp and commanding in a tailored black suit, while I wore a classic wine-red cocktail dress.
As we walked through the lobby toward the grand ballroom, Ella held Eric’s hand tightly, her eyes wide as she took in the massive crowd and the glittering lights.
"nervous, sweetie?" Eric asked, leaning down to smile at her.
"A little," Ella admitted, clutching her small speech index cards against her stomach. "What if I mess up my words?"
"You won't mess up," Hannah said instantly, wrapping her arm around Ella's waist. "You practiced twenty times. You know every single word by heart. And even if you stumble, you're still the smartest girl in this entire room."
Ella looked up at her big sister, a bright, confident smile spreading across her face. "Thanks, Hannah."
We were escorted to our table near the front of the stage by a student volunteer. Table 4 was positioned directly in front of the main podium, giving us an unobstructed view of the stage where the awards would be presented.
As we sat down, I glanced around the room. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and the soft sound of a live string quartet playing in the corner. Parents were taking photos, children were showing off their certificates, and educators were mingling. It was everything a celebration of childhood achievement was supposed to be.
At 7:15 PM, the master of ceremonies—a prominent local television news anchor named Marcus Vance—stepped up to the podium and tapped the microphone.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, educators, parents, and most importantly, our brilliant young scholars!" Marcus's voice echoed warmly through the ballroom's sound system. "Welcome to the Annual Tri-State Elementary Academic Gala!"
The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.
"Tonight," Marcus continued, "we celebrate dedication, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. We are here to honor young minds who have poured hours of hard work into mastering their craft."
I leaned over and squeezed Eric's hand under the table. His fingers wrapped tightly around mine, his eyes glistening with emotion as he watched Ella sit up straight in her chair, listening intently to the speaker.
"Our first major recognition of the evening," Marcus announced, leaning into the microphone, "goes to the winner of the Regional Elementary Spelling Championship. A young lady whose exceptional focus, dedication, and grace under pressure earned her the highest honors in our district. Please join me in welcoming to the stage... Miss Ella Miller!"
The ballroom erupted into loud applause.
Ella’s eyes went wide. She looked at Eric, then at me.
"Go get your trophy, baby," Eric whispered, his voice thick with pride.
Ella stood up, straightened her navy dress, and began walking toward the stairs on the left side of the stage.

She took her first step up the stairs.
And that was the exact moment the double doors at the back of the grand ballroom burst open.
