Chapter 13 - The Trap Closes

The summons wasn't just a motion; it was a carefully orchestrated ambush designed to break me before I even reached the courtroom. Within forty-eight hours of Victoria Vance’s visit, my phone began ringing incessantly. Unknown numbers, automated debt collection warnings regarding accounts I had never opened, and panicked emails from my freelance clients claiming they had received anonymous tips questioning my professional integrity and mental stability.
Daniel wasn't just trying to take the kids back; he was trying to systematically dismantle every single brick of the foundation I had spent the last year sweating to build.
"It’s a classic scorched-earth tactic," Richard said, his jaw tight as he paced the length of my living room late Thursday night. He had brought takeout, but neither of us had touched a bite. The cartons sat like little cardboard tombstones on the coffee table. "They’re trying to overwhelm you with manufactured crises so you miss a filing deadline, crack under the pressure, or show up to the emergency hearing looking unstable."
"And it's working," I whispered, burying my face in my hands. The exhaustion was a physical weight pressing down on my shoulders, threatening to crack my spine. "Richard, they dug up my credit history from five years ago when Daniel was still draining our accounts behind my back. They're trying to paint me as financially irresponsible."
"They can try all they want," Richard said, stopping his pacing and kneeling down in front of the armchair where I sat. He reached out, gently taking my hands away from my face, forcing me to look into his unwavering, steel-gray eyes. "They forgot one very important detail."
"What's that?"
"I’m not just your friend, Claire. I’m a senior partner at the most ruthless corporate litigation firm in this state. And Victoria Vance? She was a bottom-feeder associate at my old firm five years ago before she got fired for falsifying billable hours. I know every trick in her playbook, and I know where she hides her bodies."
A fierce, desperate spark ignited in my chest. The fear didn't vanish, but it transformed into something combustible. "What do we do?"

"We don't defend," Richard said, a cold, predatory smile curving his lips. "We counter-attack. We take her emergency motion, flip it upside down, and use it to expose Daniel’s hidden offshore assets and his history of financial abuse. We’re going to drag him into the light, Claire. And once he’s there, he’s never going to crawl back out."
