Chapter 14 - The House of Cards

The courtroom was suffocatingly hot, smelling of old paper, floor wax, and the distinct, bitter sweat of desperation. Judge Harrison sat behind the towering mahogany bench, peering over his half-moon spectacles with an expression of profound, unconcealed annoyance. He hated emergency motions filed on trumped-up charges, and Richard had spent the last twelve hours ensuring the judge knew exactly how frivolous Daniel and Victoria's petition truly was.

Victoria Vance stood at the plaintiff's table, her posture rigid, her voice slicing through the heavy air with rehearsed indignation.

"Your Honor, the defendant, Claire Sterling, has demonstrated a pattern of reckless behavior, erratic financial management, and a disregard for the established co-parenting parameters," Victoria argued, gesturing dramatically toward a thick stack of exhibits. "We have documented evidence of unstable income streams, suspicious third-party financial infusions—referring, of course, to Mr. Richard Vance’s frequent presence—and an environment that threatens the psychological well-being of the minor children."

Judge Harrison turned his gaze from Victoria to Richard. "Mr. Vance. You represent the defendant. What say you to these grave allegations?"

Richard rose slowly, buttoning his suit jacket with deliberate, unhurried grace. He didn't carry any notes. He didn't need them. He walked out from behind the defense table, his tall frame commanding absolute silence in the gallery.

"Your Honor, my learned colleague is quite right about one thing: there is indeed a pattern of reckless behavior and financial manipulation in this case," Richard began, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the room. "However, she has unfortunately pointed her finger at the wrong party."

Daniel shifted uncomfortably in his seat beside Victoria, his hand twitching toward the lapel of his jacket.

Richard clicked a remote in his hand. The massive projection screen behind the judge’s bench flickered to life, illuminating the dim courtroom with a series of bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and corporate filings.

"Exhibit A," Richard said smoothly, pointing to the screen. "A series of clandestine wire transfers executed over the last six months from a corporate shell company registered in the Cayman Islands—*Sterling Holdings LLC*—directly funding private investigators, smear campaigns, and manufactured debt notices designed to harass my client."

Victoria gasped, jumping to her feet. "Objection! Relevance! This is an unverified fishing expedition!"

"Overruled, Ms. Vance," Judge Harrison snapped, leaning forward to inspect the screen closely. "Continue, Mr. Vance."

"Thank you, Your Honor," Richard continued, pacing slowly toward the plaintiff's table, stopping just short of Daniel’s chair. "Mr. Sterling claims my client is financially unstable. Yet, these documents prove that Mr. Sterling has systematically hidden over four hundred thousand dollars in marital assets prior to our original divorce settlement, perjuring himself under oath during the initial asset division."

The courtroom went dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the overhead fluorescent lights.

Daniel’s face drained of all color, his mouth opening and closing like a fish stranded on a dock. He looked at Victoria with blind panic, but his lawyer was already frantically flipping through her briefcase, her immaculate bun looking suddenly slightly askew.
