Chapter 6 - Moving Day

The new townhouse on Elm Street smelled of fresh paint, polished hardwood, and clean beginnings.

The living room featured a large bay window that flooded the space with warm, golden winter sunlight. There was no CALEB’S CHRISTMAS KINGDOM sign on the lawn. There were no judgmental eyes watching our every move.

Maisie skipped down the hallway, inspecting her new bedroom—a bright, spacious room with pink walls and a large closet that she could actually call her own.

“Daddy! Look! There’s a built-in bookshelf!” she squealed, running her fingers along the polished wood. “Can we fill it with all my storybooks?”

“Every single one of them,” I laughed, setting a box of books down on the floor.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

I walked downstairs and opened the door to find Nicole standing there holding two large boxes of homemade lasagna, followed closely by Dana Powell, who was carrying a bottle of sparkling cider and a housewarming plant.

“Alright, boys, move aside!” Nicole announced breezily, marching into the kitchen like she owned the place. “I brought dinner, and Dana brought bubbly, which means the official Lawson Family Liberation Party has officially commenced.”

Dana set the plant on the kitchen counter, smiling warmly as she looked around the sunlit room. “This place is fantastic, Grant. Perfect location, too. You’re going to love working at Hanover.”

“I already do,” I said, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders that I hadn't realized I was carrying.

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet, we sat around our brand-new dining table. Every seat was filled. Every plate was piled high with hot, delicious lasagna. Not a single person was relegated to a breakfast bar or told there wasn't enough food.

Maisie carefully placed her wooden house ornament—HOME IS EVERYBODY—right in the center of our new kitchen windowsill, where the evening light caught the green roof and yellow windows.

She looked up at Nicole, then at Dana, and finally at me, her eyes shining with pure, unadulterated joy.

“Daddy,” she whispered happily, “this is the best home ever.”

I smiled, pulling her close against my side. “It sure is, sweetheart. It sure is.”
