Chapter 16 - The Gathering Storm

By Thursday evening, the legal papers had been filed, and Sarah informed me that Richard’s attorney had already called their office three times in a state of sheer panic. The offshore LLC had apparently been a closely guarded secret—one that Richard thought would protect his money if his marriage ever dissolved, completely underestimating the fact that a quiet wife with a grandmother’s recipe book is also a woman who keeps meticulous, obsessive records of every single household expenditure for nearly three decades.

I was in the kitchen frosting a batch of lemon cupcakes when the doorbell rang.

It wasn't Eleanor, and it wasn't Richard. When I looked through the peephole, I was surprised to see a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal-grey pantsuit standing on my porch, holding a large manila envelope.

I unlocked the door and pulled it open.

"Claire Vance?" the woman asked, her voice crisp and professional.

"I'm Claire," I replied, my eyes dropping to the envelope in her hands. "And it’s just Claire now, actually."

A faint, approving smile touched the corner of the woman’s mouth. She extended the envelope toward me. "My name is Victoria Sterling. I’m a senior investigator working with Sarah Jenkins. I have some documents that require your signature for the deposition on Monday, but more importantly... I thought you might want to see this before it hits the public record."

I took the thick envelope, stepping back to let her into the foyer. "What is it?"

Victoria stepped inside, setting a smaller leather briefcase down on the entry table. "Your brother-in-law, Thomas—Allison’s husband—didn't just lose his real estate business to bad luck. He’s currently under federal investigation for wire fraud and securities misrepresentation. And guess who invested fifty thousand dollars of your mother’s retirement fund into his failing shell company just three weeks ago?"

My jaw dropped slightly. "My mother? Eleanor invested her own retirement?"

"Not just her retirement," Victoria said, crossing her arms with a cold, professional satisfaction. "She took out a second mortgage on her own home using forged power-of-attorney documents that listed Richard as the guarantor. When Thomas’s company goes under next week, the bank isn't just going to foreclose on Allison’s house. They’re going to seize your mother’s house, too."

I stood in the silence of my hallway, processing the sheer, staggering magnitude of their self-destruction. For years, my mother had lorded her financial independence over me, treating me like a charity case because I didn't work a corporate job. She had enabled Allison’s cruelty, protected Richard’s arrogance, and looked down on me with absolute disdain. And now, the very house she lived in was about to be repossessed because of the toxic, greedy ecosystem they had all built together.

"Does Allison know?" I asked quietly.

"Allison is currently planning a charity gala for this weekend, completely oblivious to the fact that her bank accounts were frozen by a federal judge yesterday afternoon," Victoria replied smoothly. "Your family isn't just falling apart, Claire. They are imploding from the inside out. And the best part? You didn't even have to throw a punch."

I looked down at the manila envelope in my hands. The heavy cardboard felt solid, real, and anchored.

"Thank you, Victoria," I said, looking up to meet the investigator's eyes. "For your hard work on this."

"Don't thank me, Claire. Thank your ex-husband’s staggering arrogance," Victoria said with a sharp grin, picking up her briefcase. "See you at the deposition on Monday. Wear something sharp. It’s going to be a bloodbath."
