Chapter 30 - The Unfinished Recipe

The sun dipped low below the Seattle skyline, painting the boardroom windows in shades of deep amber, violet, and burning gold.

The emergency board meeting had concluded just twenty minutes earlier. Eleanor, Allison, and Richard had been escorted out of the building by corporate security, their corporate access badges permanently deactivated, their personal assets frozen pending the results of the forensic audit. The empire they had built on deceit, manipulation, and stolen recipes had crumbled in a single afternoon.

Julian and I stood together by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city lights begin to flicker on below us.

"You handled that like a seasoned executive, Claire," Julian said with a warm, approving smile, raising a crystal glass of sparkling water in a silent toast. "Arthur would have been intensely proud of you."

"Thank you, Julian," I replied, gently clinking my glass against his. "For everything. I couldn't have done it without your help."

"You did the heavy lifting, Claire. I just unlocked the door," Julian said softly. He paused, looking over at me with a gentle, lingering curiosity. "So... what's next? Now that you own half the publishing world and every single copyright your grandmother ever wrote?"

I smiled, turning away from the panoramic city view and looking toward the private elevator that would take me back down to the real world—back to my quiet home, back to Megan and little Lucy, and back to the vintage ceramic casserole dish waiting on the kitchen island.

"First," I said, my eyes sparkling with quiet triumph, "I’m going home to bake."

Julian laughed, a rich, genuine sound that echoed warmly in the empty executive suite. "Sounds like a plan. Need a taste tester?"

"Only if you promise not to ruin the crust," I teased, turning toward the elevator.

The evening shadows lengthened across the penthouse floor as the private elevator doors slid open. I stepped inside, pressing the button for the lobby, feeling an overwhelming sense of absolute peace and unshakeable freedom wash over me. The past was buried, the accounts were settled, and my life was entirely my own masterpiece.

As the heavy brass doors began to slide shut, separating the corporate empire from the quiet sanctuary of my future, my phone suddenly buzzed in my coat pocket with a sharp, insistent vibration. I pulled it out, glancing down at the screen.

It was a text message from an unrecognized international number, containing only a single image file and a chilling four-word caption that made my blood run instantly cold:

*Look out your kitchen window.*
