Chapter 6 - The Fortress

The Moretti estate was a massive, high-walled compound built like a modern castle in Lake Forest. Surrounded by steel gates, security cameras, and armed guards, it was the safest place in Chicago—and the place I had swore I would never step foot into again.
As the heavy iron gates slammed shut behind our armored SUV, I felt a heavy weight settle onto my chest.
Vincent guided us inside the grand foyer. The marble floors and crystal chandeliers were just as cold as I remembered. He instructed the house staff to prepare the master guest suite on the third floor for Emily and me.
"Put the best guards on the floor. No one enters without my personal authorization," Vincent ordered Marco.
"Understood, Boss."
Vincent turned to me, wincing slightly as he held his wounded shoulder. "There's a doctor in the medical wing. But first... Claire, please. Sit with me for ten minutes. You deserve the whole truth."
I looked down at Emily, who was looking wide-eyed at the grand staircase. "Madison, take Emily up to the room, please. I'll be right up."
Once Emily and Madison disappeared upstairs, I followed Vincent into his private study—a room lined with leather books, heavy oak furniture, and the lingering scent of rich cigar smoke and bourbon.
Vincent poured himself a glass of water with a shaking hand, setting it down without drinking. He stood across from me, looking defeated.
"Seven years ago," Vincent began, his voice raspy, "Sophia came to me claiming she was pregnant. My father was dying, Claire. The syndicate elders were threatening to strip my leadership if I didn't produce a male heir. They viewed my marriage to you—an outsider from a legitimate business family—as a liability."
"So you slept with my sister," I spat, my voice laced with venom.
"I made a catastrophic mistake!" Vincent slammed his hand onto his desk, his eyes burning with regret. "One night of weakness, one night of heavy drinking after my father’s funeral. Sophia targeted me. She wanted the Moretti name, and her mother helped her engineer it!"
"That doesn't excuse abandoning me in that hospital room, Vincent!"
"I didn't want to leave you!" Vincent shouted, tears finally breaking past his eyes. "When you went into labor early, your mother came to me. She told me Sophia was having severe complications, that the baby boy was dying. She begged me to come upstairs for five minutes just to sign the consent forms for an emergency C-section!"
I froze. "What?"
"I thought I would sign the papers and come straight back down to you," Vincent continued, his voice cracking. "But when I tried to return to your room, your mother met me in the hallway. She told me... she told me you had given birth to a stillborn baby girl. She said you were so traumatized you refused to see me, that you blamed me for the baby’s death and wanted a divorce immediately."
I stood there, paralyzed by the horrific realization of what my family had done.
"I tried to get into your room, Claire," Vincent whispered, taking a step toward me. "Your father had four private guards blocking the door. They handed me divorce papers signed by your attorney. I was out of my mind with grief and guilt. I thought I had destroyed your life, so I let you go."
"My mother signed those papers using my power of attorney while I was unconscious from the emergency anesthesia," I whispered, the puzzle pieces finally snapping into place. "She took the settlement money, paid off the hospital staff to falsify the records, and told me you traded Emily for a son."

Vincent dropped to his knees right in front of me, grabbing the hem of my coat, bowing his head as tears streamed down his rugged, scarred face.
"They stole seven years of my daughter's life from me, Claire," Vincent sobbed quietly. "And they made you believe I didn't love my own child."
