Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

"Marco! Status!" Vincent shouted into his radio.

"Boss, we’re pinned down in the foyer! Old man Donati himself is leading the breach! He’s demanding the girl!"

Vincent’s jaw set into hard stone. The gentleness in his eyes evaporated, replaced by an ancient, merciless rage. He turned to Madison. "There is an escape tunnel behind the wardrobe in this room. It leads to a hidden garage outside the perimeter gate. Take the keycard from my desk. Take Claire and Emily and drive to the safehouse in Milwaukee."

"Vincent, no!" I grabbed his arm. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to end this war," Vincent said, looking deep into my eyes. "Seven years ago, I let other people dictate my life and ruin my family. I won't let them take you again, Claire. Not ever."

He pulled me close, cupping the back of my neck, and pressed a desperate, fierce kiss to my lips. It was filled with seven years of unexpressed grief, longing, and unresolved love.

"If I don't make it out of this house tonight..." Vincent whispered against my lips, "everything I own is in Emily’s name. You were always my true wife, Claire. Always."

Before I could protest, he pulled away, grabbed two tactical rifles from the secret wall armory, and stepped out into the hallway, slamming the reinforced door behind him.

"Claire, we have to go!" Madison urged, pulling the heavy wardrobe aside to reveal a dark, modern steel elevator door.

I grabbed Emily, my chest burning with a terrifying realization: despite everything, despite the seven years of pain and betrayal... I didn't want Vincent to die.

We slid into the secret escape elevator, descending deep beneath the earth into the underground tunnel.

Ten minutes later, we emerged into a hidden garage situated half a mile away from the estate, obscured by thick woods. A black armored sedan sat waiting.

As Madison started the engine, the radio scanner in the vehicle crackled to life, picking up the internal Moretti tactical channel.

"Target eliminated! Donati’s forces are retreating! Repeat, Donati is down!" Marco’s voice echoed over the speaker, breathy and triumphant. "Boss is hit! I repeat, Donati hit the Don! Medical team needed in the main hall immediately!"

My heart plummeted into a cold abyss.

"Madison," I whispered, my hand gripping the door handle. "Turn the car around."
