Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

"You crazy bitch!" Richard roared, spitting paper from his lips. "You think you can threaten me? I built you! Everything you have belongs to the Vance name!"
"Correction, Richard," I said, leaning back against my pillows, feeling a wave of absolute, liberating clarity wash over my body. "You didn't build me. You fed on me. For ten years, you used my designs, my licenses, and my credit lines to pretend you were a real estate mogul. You are nothing but an empty suit drowning in debt."
Evelyn pointed a trembling finger at David. "You brainwashed her! You white-trash parasite, you turned our daughter against her own flesh and blood!"
"Mrs. Vance," David said, stepping forward. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer aura of authority radiating from him made Evelyn take two rapid steps backward until her spine hit the wall. "I suggest you check your phone. It appears your bank is trying to reach you."
As if on cue, the high-pitched chime of an incoming urgent notification rang out from Evelyn’s handbag. A second later, Richard’s phone vibrated violently against his hip.
Richard scowled, pulling out his device. His brow furrowed as he read the screen. Then, his eyes widened until the whites showed completely.
"What is this?" Richard muttered, tapping the screen frantically. "This is an error. This has to be an error."
"What is it, Richard?" Evelyn asked, panic creeping into her voice.
"My black card... the corporate credit facility with Chase... suspended," Richard stammered. "Ten million dollars in operational revolving credit... canceled due to immediate debt acceleration?"
Before Richard could process the notification, the door to Suite 408 burst open again.
Julian, Chloe’s husband, stumbled in. A thick white bandage was taped across the bridge of his nose, two black eyes ringing his pale face. He looked disheveled, his designer polo shirt crumpled.
"Richard!" Julian gasped, clutching the doorframe. "What the hell is going on? The front desk downstairs just stopped Chloe’s discharge paperwork! They said the VIP suite bill was rejected! Eighty-five thousand dollars! The hospital finance director just canceled Chloe's valet privileges, and they're towing my Maybach from the reserved parking lot right now!"
"What?!" Evelyn shrieked. "Towing your car? Do they know who we are?"
"They know exactly who you are," David said, stepping over to the window and pulling back the plastic blinds.
Down in the hospital courtyard, two heavy-duty flatbed tow trucks were already winching a sleek black Mercedes-Maybach and Richard’s Bentley Continental onto their steel beds. Two uniformed officers from the city police department stood by, clipboard in hand, ensuring no one interfered.
"You..." Richard turned to David, his hands shaking violently. "What did you do? Who did you call?"
"I didn't call anyone, Richard," David said coolly, resting his hands in his pockets. "I merely withdrew my personal guarantees. You see, when you took out those twenty-five-million-dollar high-yield promissory notes through Apex Holdings three years ago to fund your lifestyle, you didn't read the fine print. Apex Holdings is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sterling & Croft."
Richard’s face drained completely of blood. The arrogance that had sustained him his entire life collapsed, leaving behind a hollow, terrified shell.
"Sterling... & Croft?" Richard choked out. "You're... you're an independent consultant!"
"I am the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer," David said, each word landing like a sledgehammer. "I allowed you to live in your fantasy world because Clara loved you. She believed that beneath your greed, there was a father who cared about her. I tolerated your insults, your condescension, and your theft because my wife asked for peace."
David took one step closer to Richard, his shadow engulfing the older man.
"But yesterday, you stood outside that intensive care unit and called my daughter 'underdeveloped tissue.' You tried to strip her of medical coverage while she gasped for oxygen. You signed her death warrant for eighty-five thousand dollars."
David leaned down, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that made Julian tremble by the door.
"Every note is called in, Richard. The mortgages on your estate in Greenwich, your penthouse in Manhattan, your fleet of cars, and the corporate headquarters of Vance Enterprises. You have until twelve o'clock today to produce thirty-eight million dollars in cash. If you cannot, the federal marshals will pad-lock your doors before the stock market closes."
"No..." Evelyn collapsed into a visitor's chair, hyperventilating. "No, this can't be happening! Richard, tell him he's lying! Tell him!"
Richard couldn't speak. His mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the shrill, hysterical screaming of a woman.
"Julian! Dad! Where are you?!"
May you like
It was Chloe.
