Chapter 5 - The Public Collapse

The entire fourth floor of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital had gathered in the corridor. Nurses, orderlies, and visiting families peeked out from behind sliding glass doors as Chloe Vance stumbled down the hallway in a silk designer robe, pushing a wheeled bassinet containing baby Oliver.
Her hair, normally styled in perfect platinum waves, was an absolute rat’s nest. Her makeup was smeared with tears of pure rage.
"Julian!" Chloe shrieked, storming into my room, completely ignoring the sterile protocol. "The hospital staff just revoked my room key! They locked me out of the VIP suite! They said our account is delinquent and they’re moving me to a communal four-bed ward on the general surgery floor! Do you know what kind of people are down there? Poor people! Sick people!"
She stopped dead in her tracks as she noticed the scene inside Room 408: her father trembling like an old man facing an executioner, her mother sobbing into a designer bag, and Julian looking like a battered stray dog.
"What is going on here?" Chloe demanded, stomping her foot. She glared at me, her eyes spitting venom. "Clara! Did you do this? Did you complain to the administration because you were jealous of my suite? You always do this! You always ruin my moments!"
I sat up straight in my hospital bed, ignoring the throbbing pain in my abdomen. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel the urge to soothe her, to apologize, or to hand over my checkbook to make her smile.
"Chloe," I said, my voice cutting through her hysterics like a razor. "Shut your mouth."
Chloe gasped, taking a step back as if she had been slapped. "What did you say to me?"
"I said shut your mouth," I repeated, cold fury vibrating in every syllable. "You are thirty-two years old. You have never worked a day in your life. You have lived in mansions paid for by my designs, driven cars bought with my bonuses, and draped yourself in diamonds purchased with my sweat. And yesterday, while my daughter was fighting for her life inside a plastic box, you drank champagne and let our father attempt to strip her of life support."
"She’s just an incubator baby!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking. "Oliver is the future of this family! Julian is an heir to the Thorne estate! We deserve the best! You’re just a bitter, workaholic freak whose body couldn't even carry a baby to full term!"
A collective gasp went up from the crowd of hospital staff gathered outside the doorway.
Julian, who had been standing silent with his broken nose, suddenly stiffened. He looked at Chloe, then down at the bassinet containing baby Oliver.
"Julian, do something!" Chloe whined, tugging at his arm. "Tell this peasant husband of hers to give us our money back! Call your father! Have the Thorne trust buy out this entire hospital and fire every nurse on this floor!"
"Julian can't call his father, Chloe," David said smoothly, pulling a crisp white envelope from his suit pocket. "Because if he does, the Thorne family will immediately demand an explanation for this."
David tossed the envelope onto the bassinet, right beside the sleeping baby.
Julian frowned, snatching the envelope before Chloe could touch it. He tore open the seal and pulled out the laboratory report Nurse Sarah had verified hours earlier.
"What is this?" Julian muttered, scanning the medical terminology. "Blood type analysis... neonatal screening..."
"Julian, don't look at that garbage!" Chloe shrieked, suddenly lunging to snatch the paper from his hands.
Her panic was immediate, frantic, and guilty.
Julian jerked his arm back, his eyes darting across the lines of text. His face, already bruised and swollen, morphed into an expression of sheer horror.
"Blood Type B-positive?" Julian read aloud, his voice cracking. "Chloe... you're Type A. I am Type O-negative. A child from us can only be Type A or Type O. It is genetically impossible for this baby to be B-positive."
The entire room went dead silent. Even Evelyn stopped sobbing.
"Julian, baby, listen to me!" Chloe pleaded, her voice turning high and desperate. "The hospital made a mistake! Those lab techs are incompetent! You know Clara is trying to tear us apart! She forged that!"
"The test was run three times through the central pathology lab, Mr. Thorne," Nurse Sarah said from the doorway, her arms crossed firmly over her chest. "There is no mistake. Furthermore, the genetic markers cross-reference with an existing private donor profile currently on file in our system: Marcus Sterling."
Julian stared at Chloe. The silence stretched until it felt like the floorboards would crack under the pressure.
"Marcus Sterling?" Julian whispered, his hands trembling violently. "Marcus Sterling... the guy you said was just a 'financial advisor' helping you set up our baby's trust fund? You were sleeping with him?"
"Julian, no! It was a mistake! It was only once, I swear! We were drunk at the country club gala!" Chloe dropped to her knees on the linoleum, clutching at Julian’s trousers. "Please, Julian! Oliver needs a father! The Thorne name—"
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Julian roared, kicking her away with such force that she tumbled sideways onto the floor, her silk robe tearing.
Julian crumpled the genetic report into a ball and threw it directly into Chloe’s face.
"My family gave your father three million dollars last month as an investment for this child!" Julian screamed, his voice echoing down the entire ward. "You used me! You passed off another man’s bastard as a Thorne heir!"
He turned on Richard, his eyes bloodshot with rage. "You knew, didn't you, old man? That’s why you pushed the wedding forward! That’s why you begged me to sign the trust agreements before the birth!"
Richard held his hands up, stammering, "Julian... son... please, let's talk about this in private—"
"I am not your son!" Julian spat, backing out into the hallway. "My lawyers will serve the annulment papers by noon! And my father will freeze every single Thorne asset tied to Vance Enterprises! You're ruined, Richard! You’re all going to prison!"
May you like
Julian turned and sprinted down the hallway, leaving Chloe wailing uncontrollably on the floor, clawing at the sterile hospital tiles.
