Chapter 10 - THE GREEN FIELDS OF FOREVER

The sun broke through the clouds just as Maeve’s Mini Cooper pulled out of Rathmines and headed toward the sweeping, emerald expanse of Phoenix Park.
The air was crisp and smelled of damp earth, blooming clover, and fresh rain.
Sitting in the passenger seat with the window rolled down two inches, I let the wind whip through my hair. My hands, which had once been blistered and shaking on a cold Tacoma morning, were now steady, strong, and entirely my own.
“Penny for your thoughts, pet,” Maeve said, glancing over at me with a knowing smile as she navigated the roundabout.
“Just thinking about how lucky I am,” I said, looking out at the endless fields of green rolling toward the horizon.
“Luck had nothing to do with it,” Maeve declared, tapping the steering wheel emphatically. “You walked through fire, Clara. And you didn't let it burn your soul. That wasn't luck. That was pure backbone.”
I smiled, feeling a deep, unshakeable warmth settle deep into my bones.
I thought of my father, resting peacefully in the soil of his homeland. I thought of the empty, quiet house in Tacoma, now sold to strangers and stripped of its toxic weight. And I thought of the classroom full of curious students waiting for me on Monday morning, the cozy flat with its geraniums, and the man who held my hand with absolute respect and steady love.
My luggage had burned to ashes. My past had been reduced to smoke.

And from those very ashes, I had built a life that was magnificent, unbreakable, and entirely my own.
As the car sped forward along the open Irish highway, chasing the golden morning light, I took a deep, final breath of the sweet, salt-laced air, knowing with absolute certainty that I was finally, wonderfully home.
