Chapter 15 - The First Bloom of Spring

Two weeks later, the spring thaw truly took hold across the city, painting the suburban neighborhood in vibrant shades of emerald green and pale pink cherry blossoms. Life had settled into a rhythm so peaceful it almost felt like a dream. On a bright Saturday morning, Grace and I stood out in our backyard, kneeling on the damp earth beside the wooden fence. We were planting rows of bright yellow daffodils—the very same flowers we had talked about months ago, when the nightmare of broken glasses and kitchen floors felt like an insurmountable mountain. Grace wore her favorite pink gardening gloves, her hands covered in rich black soil as she carefully dropped a bulb into the hole she had dug. Her trusty glasses rested securely on her face, catching the morning sunlight. "Mom, do you think these flowers will grow tall enough to reach the top of the fence?" she asked, looking up at me with bright, curious eyes, a smudge of dirt smeared across her cheek. I crouched beside her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as we looked out across our vibrant, peaceful yard. "With enough sunlight, water, and care?" I smiled, wiping the dirt away with my thumb. "They'll grow higher than the fence, sweetheart. They'll grow all the way to the sky." Grace laughed—a bright, carefree sound that rang out into the morning air, filling the entire yard with warmth and absolute safety. Lauren had tried to teach a seven-year-old child a lesson about respect by breaking her glasses and forcing her to scrub floors. Instead, she had taught me just how far a mother's love could reach to protect her world. And looking at the golden horizon stretching out before us, I knew with absolute certainty that no force on earth could ever break that kind of strength again.
