Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Kingdom

Lauren’s smirk flickered for a fraction of a second, unsettled by my laughter.

"What's so funny?" Lauren snapped, her voice rising in defensive irritation. "You think it's a joke that your daughter runs around like a spoiled brat?"

"I think it's hilarious," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of the house, "that you talk so much about respect while systematically committing grand larceny behind our aging father’s back."

The room dropped ten degrees.

Mom’s dish towel slipped from her trembling fingers and hit the hardwood floor with a soft slap. My father lowered his newspaper so fast it tore down the center fold. His eyes went wide, darting between me and Lauren with blind panic.

"Erin," my father stammered, his voice weak and raspy. "What... what are you talking about?"

"What is she talking about?" Lauren scoffed, though a sharp edge of genuine panic suddenly pierced her confident facade. Her face flushed a mottled red. "Are you out of your mind? Have you lost your entire professional mind in that hospital? She’s deflecting because she can't control her kid!"

"Am I?" I asked smoothly.

I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the encrypted flash drive, and walked slowly toward the glass coffee table in the center of the room. I set the small black device down on the polished wood with a deliberate *clack*.

"Last night, I didn't spend my time crying over broken glass, Lauren," I said, locking my gaze onto her wide, darting eyes. "I spent it reviewing municipal property deeds, corporate restructuring filings, and notarized transfer documents dating back to the sale of the Riverside commercial plaza."

Lauren’s mimosa glass trembled in her hand, spilling a few drops of pale orange liquid onto the expensive rug.

"You... you don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, her voice losing its polished arrogance. "Dad signed those papers! Dad transferred the property to my corporate entity fair and square!"

"Did he?" I turned my head toward my father, whose hands were now shaking so violently he couldn't hold the torn newspaper steady. "Dad, do you remember signing away the Riverside plaza four years ago? Do you remember authorizing the transfer of four million dollars in commercial real estate exclusively to Lauren’s private LLC?"

My father stared blankly, his lower lip trembling. "I... I don't... Lauren said it was just tax paperwork for the family trust. She told me to sign on the dotted line so we could save on inheritance taxes..."

"Except it wasn't for the family trust," I said, stepping closer to Lauren, who instinctively backed away until her spine hit the living room bookshelf. "Every single cent of those rental revenues went straight into Lauren’s personal offshore-linked account. And worse—the signature on the deed doesn't match your medical tremor profile, Dad. Vance & Sterling’s forensic legal team verified it yesterday morning. It’s a complete, fraudulent forgery."

"Lies!" Lauren shrieked, her composure shattering entirely as she lunged forward. "You lying, manipulative bitch! You've always been jealous of me! You think you can waltz in here with your hospital job and ruin my life over a pair of cheap glasses?"

"It wasn't about the glasses, Lauren," I whispered, stepping so close she could see the cold contempt in my eyes. "It was about you testing my limits. And you failed."

Before Lauren could scream another word, the heavy front door swung wide open.

Marcus Vance stepped into the foyer, flanked by a uniformed municipal bailiff and a junior associate carrying a thick stack of formal legal bound volumes.

"Good morning," Marcus announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the quiet house. "I am Marcus Vance representing the estate of Arthur and Evelyn Sinclair. We have an emergency injunction, a notice of civil asset freezing, and a criminal referral for identity theft and grand larceny ready for immediate execution."

Lauren let out a high-pitched, choked gasp, her knees completely buckling beneath her as she slid down the bookshelf onto the floor, staring in absolute, paralyzed horror at the legal team closing in around her.
