Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The presence of the security cameras sent Linda into a tailspin, but the nightmare for her was only beginning.
That afternoon, while Edward sat at the kitchen island with his head in his hands, Clara sat across from him with Gabriella. Dylan was upstairs safely playing video games, completely sheltered from the storm.
"Edward," Clara said gently, her tone softened by maternal sadness, but firm in resolve. "I need you to answer me truthfully. Why did you really lose your job three weeks ago?"
Edward winced. He didn't look up. "Mom, I told you... corporate downsizing. The market is tough."
Gabriella slid a thin blue folder across the marble counter toward Edward. "Do you want to tell her, Edward? Or should I read the official termination report from your former employer’s legal department?"
Linda stepped into the kitchen just in time to hear Gabriella's words. She froze by the doorway. "What termination report? Edward said his position was eliminated!"
Gabriella opened the folder. "Edward was terminated for cause. Specifically, for unauthorized corporate credit card usage totaling forty-two thousand dollars over an eighteen-month period."
Linda gasped, taking a step back. "What?! Edward, what is she talking about?!"
Edward slammed his hands on the counter, tears welling in his eyes. "I had to, okay?! I had to keep up! The lease on the Mercedes! The luxury vacations to Cabo! The designer clothes! You kept pushing me, Linda! You kept telling me all your real estate friends' husbands made six figures and that we looked poor! I couldn't tell you we couldn't afford it!"
The truth hung in the kitchen air like heavy smoke.
Linda’s eyes darted frantically. The high-class lifestyle she boasted about on social media—the luxury brunches, the high-end outfits, the suburban prestige—was built entirely on stolen money and spiraling debt.
"The company didn't press criminal charges," Gabriella added coolly, "only because Edward signed a confession and agreed to a strict repayment schedule. A repayment schedule that requires five thousand dollars a month. Money he doesn't have."
"That’s why you brought her here," Clara said, looking at her son with profound heartbreak. "You didn't just come home to recover, Edward. You came here hoping to convince me to sell this house, put me in a retirement facility, and use the equity to pay off your debts."
Edward couldn't look his mother in the eye. His silence was a total confession.
Linda, realizing her entire social structure was collapsing, suddenly shifted tactics. She abandoned her aggressive posture and took a step toward Clara, her hands clasped together in a frantic, desperate plea.
"Clara... please," Linda begged, her voice trembling with manufactured tears. "We’re family! You can't let Edward go to prison! You have millions in equity in this brick home! You could downsize to a lovely condo! It’s for your grandson's future!"

Clara stood up slowly. She looked down at Linda—the woman who, less than forty-eight hours ago, had treated her like a servant in her own home.
"My husband built this home to protect this family from ruin," Clara said, her voice dripping with ice. "He did not build it to fund your vanity, Linda. And you will never, ever dictate terms to me again."
