Chapter 6 - The Counter-Offensive

Linda was not a woman who gave up easily. Realizing that begging wouldn't break Clara’s iron resolve, she resorted to dirty tactics.

Over the next three days, as the thirty-day eviction notice ticked down, Linda began waging a passive-aggressive war inside the house. She left taps running, turned the thermostat up to ninety degrees when Clara stepped out, and started calling local real estate inspectors, claiming the house was an unsafe environment for a minor due to "elderly neglect."

On Friday morning, two social workers from Cook County Family and Protective Services arrived at the front door, citing an anonymous report about a child living in an unhygienic, structurally unsafe home managed by a senile occupant.

Clara calmly invited the two inspectors inside.

"Please, come in," Clara said warmly.

Before the inspectors could even open their notebooks, Gabriella walked out of the study, holding an iPad.

"Good morning, officers," Gabriella said, handing them formal credentials. "I am Clara Miller’s legal counsel. Before you conduct your walk-through, we would like to submit a formal filing for a false report, complete with audio records."

Gabriella played a crystal-clear recording captured by the home's smart-doorbell camera two nights prior. Linda’s voice rang out sharp and clear into the hallway:

"If we make the house look unlivable and report the old woman as mentally unfit, the court will appoint Edward as temporary guardian of the property. Then we can list the house by next month."

The social workers listened to the recording, their expressions turning from professional curiosity to sharp disgust.

The senior social worker turned to look at Linda, who was standing at the top of the stairs, her face draining of all color once again.

"Mrs. Miller," the social worker said sternly to Linda, "filing a fraudulent report with Adult Protective Services and Child Welfare is a Class 4 felony in the State of Illinois. We will be turning this recording directly over to the State's Attorney's office."

"Wait! No!" Linda shrieked, taking a step back. "I was just stressed! I was trying to protect my son!"

"Your son is fine," Clara said, stepping forward. "It’s your ambition that is sick."

With the social workers documenting the fraudulent claim, Gabriella immediately served Linda with an emergency temporary restraining order and an expedited Notice of Exigent Eviction signed by a Cook County judge, citing harassment and elder abuse.

"You have two hours to pack your personal belongings, Linda," Gabriella announced, presenting the court order. "If you are on this property at 2:01 p.m., the Sheriff’s department will remove you in handcuffs."
