Chapter 8 - The Ghost Returns

"Put the gun down, Robert," Thomas Vance said, his voice raspy, weathered, and cold as desert stone.
Vanessa spun around, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she stared at the old man. "Dad? What... what are you doing here? You said you were in Zurich!"
"I told you a lot of things, Vanessa," Vance said without looking at her, his eyes locked entirely on Robert Callahan. "Some children are born to inherit empires. Others are born to be useful tools. You served your purpose wonderfully, leading me right back to the only man in Arizona who could still unlock the remaining offshore accounts."
Daniel stepped forward, his voice cracking with rage. "You used her! You lied to her about her own mother just to get us out here!"
"Shut up, boy," Vance snarled, adjusting his grip on the revolver. "Your father ruined my life seventeen years ago. He thought he was being a hero, digging into accounts he had no business touching. And tonight, the circle gets closed."
Robert didn't flinch. He stood tall against the desert wind, his mind calculating angles, wind speed, and distance. Vance’s hand was shaking slightly—age, arthritis, or alcohol had taken the edge off his former precision.
"You're too late, Tom," Robert said calmly, his voice steady and resonant. "The federal marshals already have copies of the Meridian financial records synced to the cloud. The moment you pulled that ledger out of the safe house, the encryption key unlocked a dead-man’s switch. Every bank in Zurich and the Caymans knows you're alive."
Vance’s face contorted with fury. "You're bluffing! You always were a stubborn, sanctimonious prick who thought he was smarter than everyone else in the room!"
"Am I?" Robert tilted his head toward the ridge behind Vance.
From the shadows of the access road, the twin beams of three Maricopa County Sheriff cruisers suddenly cut through the darkness, their red and blue emergency strobes painting the desert rocks in a violent, flashing rhythm.
"Drop the weapon, Thomas! Hands where we can see them!" a bullhorn echoed from the leading cruiser.

Vance panicked, his eyes darting between the approaching police cruisers and Robert. "This isn't over! I'll take you with me!"
He swung the revolver toward Robert’s chest.
