Chapter 9 - Justice in the Desert

In a split-second movement born of decades of tactical survival, Robert didn't duck—he lunged forward, slamming his forearm upward against Vance’s wrist just as the revolver discharged.
Bang!
The bullet screamed harmlessly into the night sky, chewing through the canvas of a nearby utility pole.
Before Vance could recover, Robert drove a swift, precise palm strike into the old man's chest, sending him stumbling backward off balance. Vance tripped over a jagged outcrop of rock near the cliff edge, his arms flailing wildly as the leather ledger slipped from his grasp, tumbling down into the dark abyss of the canyon below.
Vanessa screamed, lunging forward to grab her stepfather’s coat, but it was too late. Vance tumbled sideways, catching himself on a narrow rocky ledge ten feet below the rim, hanging by his fingertips over the hundred-foot drop.
"Help me! Vanessa, pull me up!" Vance shrieked, his face turning purple with terror as loose gravel cascaded down into the dark void beneath him.
Vanessa stood at the edge of the precipice, looking down at the man who had lied to her, manipulated her, and turned her entire life into a weapon of revenge. The wind whipped her golden hair across her face, hiding her expression in shadow.
For five long seconds, nobody moved.
Then, Vanessa slowly stepped back from the ledge.
Sirens wailed as the first police cruiser skidded to a halt ten yards away. Doors flew open, and armed deputies poured out onto the gravel, shouting commands and drawing their service weapons.

Robert walked over to the edge, looking down at Thomas Vance clinging desperately to the rock face, and extended a sturdy, calloused hand downward.
"Grab my wrist, Tom," Robert said firmly. "You're going to live to answer a lot of questions."
