Chapter 10 - THE LAST PAGE

Six months later, the morning sun shone brightly through the glass windows of the newly renovated flagship DeLuca restaurant on Fifth Avenue.

The grand reopening of the flagship had taken place the night before, drawing glowing reviews from every major food critic in New York City. The headline in the New York Times Dining Section read simply: THE DELECA EMPIRE RETURNS TO ITS ROOTS: HOW A STAINED RECIPE BOOK SAVED A LEGACY.

Inside the private office on the second floor, Lily Carter sat behind a large mahogany desk, reviewing the final architectural blueprints for the upcoming expansion into Boston.

The heavy oak door swung open without a knock.

Marco walked in, holding two steaming cups of espresso and a small, leather-bound volume that looked remarkably familiar.

It was the red recipe book.

He walked over to her desk, set one espresso cup down beside her laptop, and gently laid the heavy red book flat in the center of the desk.

Lily looked up, raising an eyebrow. “Is this an inspection, Mr. DeLuca?”

“Only if you’re willing to grade my work,” Marco replied with a slow, teasing smile, pulling up the chair right beside her desk and sitting down.

Lily opened the cover of the red book. The faded pages, held together with yellowed tape and decades of history, fell open naturally to page forty-two—the grease-splattered page where Antonio and Maria had written their very first Sunday sauce recipe in 1978.

At the bottom of the page, beneath forty-six years of family history, there was a brand-new entry written in fresh, bold ink in Marco’s handwriting:

“June 12, 2027. The recipe remains the same, but the family just got stronger.”

Lily stared at the words, her heart swelling with an emotion so profound it left her temporarily speechless.

Marco reached across the desk, covering her hand with his.

“My mother told me this morning that there’s one final page left in this book,” Marco said softly, his dark eyes searching hers with complete, absolute devotion. “And she wants to know who’s going to write the next chapter.”

Lily looked down at the book, then up at the man who had risked everything to protect his family’s legacy—and in doing so, had found his true home.

She smiled, a bright, radiant smile that chased away every shadow of the past.

“Well,” Lily whispered, her fingers intertwining with his over the stained red cover, “I suppose we’d better get started.”

And as the sun climbed higher over the glittering towers of Manhattan, illuminating a future built on truth, resilience, and an unshakeable foundation of love and family, the red book remained open on the desk—ready for the next great story to begin.
