Chapter 16 - THE MIDNIGHT TOAST

The wedding reception was a legendary Brooklyn affair that spilled out onto the sidewalk of Atlantic Avenue long past midnight. Accordions played lively tarantellas, wooden tables groaned under the weight of roasted meats, artisan cheeses, and endless carafes of robust Chianti, and the laughter of three generations of Hales echoed into the cool autumn night.
Inside the private office at the back of the restaurant, away from the festive clamor of the crowd, the room was quiet.
Lily sat at her mahogany desk, her silk wedding dress pooled gracefully around her chair, gently slipping off her high heels to massage her tired feet. The heavy red cookbook lay open right in front of her under the soft glow of a green-shaded banker’s lamp.
The door clicked open softly, and Marco stepped inside carrying two crystal flutes filled with vintage prosecco. He handed one to Lily, leaned down, and kissed the top of her head before sliding into the chair beside her.
"Your mother is currently teaching my uncle how to dance the tango on the sidewalk," Marco laughed, taking a long sip of his prosecco. "It's either going to end in a romantic reconciliation or a trip to Methodist Hospital."
"Knowing your family," Lily smiled, clinking her glass gently against his, "it’ll be both before the night is over."
Marco set his glass down on the desk, reached into his breast pocket, and pulled out a fountain pen filled with deep, archival black ink. He uncapped it with a soft *click* and handed it across the desk to Lily.
"It’s time," Marco said quietly, his dark eyes fixed on hers with absolute, unshakeable devotion.
Lily looked down at the open page of the red cookbook. Forty-six years of family history—stains of tomato sauce, grease smudges from midnight baking sessions, handwritten notes in Italian and English—led right down to the bottom margin where Marco had made his entry two weeks ago.
With a steady, deliberate hand, Lily pressed the nib of the fountain pen to the crisp white paper and wrote in clean, elegant script:
*"October 14, 2027. The foundation is set, the past is reclaimed, and the future is ours to write together. — Lily & Marco Hale."*
She capped the pen, leaned back in her chair, and let out a long, contented sigh. "There. The book is officially full."
Marco smiled, reaching across the desk to cover her hand with his. "Not quite, my love," he whispered softly, pointing toward the very inside back cover—a section that had been hidden beneath a glued-in paper pocket for decades.

Lily frowned, gently peeling back the yellowed paper pocket. Inside slid a small, folded piece of parchment written in Antonio Hale’s sharp, precise hand from 1983.
