Chapter 18 - The Heirloom

I kept the heavy brass flashlight beam locked directly on her face, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the handle.
"Identify yourself, or I swear to God I'll wake the entire neighborhood and call the federal marshals," I warned, stepping into the kitchen and planting my feet firmly on the tile floor.
The woman didn't flinch. She slowly set the silver fork down onto the tray with a crisp, echoing clink, then slid her hands into the pockets of her dark trench coat.
"My name is Genevieve Sterling," she said smoothly, tilting her head slightly. "Julian's eldest daughter. The child he disowned and hid away in a European boarding school twenty years ago before he decided to build his criminal empire on the bones of our family."
The name hit me like a physical blow. *Julian's eldest daughter.* Throughout all our investigations, the federal dossiers, and the legal battles, her name had never once surfaced. She was the ghost within the ghost.
"You're dead," I said, my voice shaking slightly despite my best efforts to sound composed. "The official estate records showed Julian's entire bloodline was accounted for—Marcus was the last."
Genevieve let out a low, musical laugh that lacked any genuine warmth. "Official estate records are written by the men currently holding the pen, Thomas. My dear uncle Marcus was too arrogant, too obsessed with corporate control to realize that my father had a backup plan. A true bloodline doesn't end just because a few men die at a dinner party."
She stepped forward out of the shadows, the moonlight catching the emerald pendant hanging around her neck—a family heirloom bearing the Sterling crest.
"Why are you here, Genevieve?" I demanded, keeping my distance. "If you want money, it's gone. The federal government seized every cent of the Sterling estate."
"Money?" Genevieve scoffed, walking slowly around the kitchen island. "Do you really think I flew halfway across the world for scraps of my father's dirty corporate wealth? No, Thomas. I'm here for something much more valuable."
She stopped just three feet away from me, her emerald eyes locking onto mine with terrifying clarity.

"I'm here for the truth about what happened on Christmas Eve," she whispered, her voice dropping to a low, hypnotic hum. "And more importantly... I'm here to collect the debt your family owes for ending the Sterling bloodline."
Before I could react, the front door upstairs burst open with a loud crash, and Clara’s terrified voice echoed down the stairwell: "Thomas! The children's room—they're gone!"
