Chapter 25 - The Turning Tide

"Drop your weapons! Drop them right now, or I swear to God I will blow every single one of you straight to hell!" Clara’s voice echoed through the grand foyer with the authority of a vengeful goddess. She held the heavy shotgun with absolute steadiness, the barrel locked dead-center on the chest of the lead tactical guard. The element of surprise completely shattered Genevieve's tactical advantage. The two guards flanking the children hesitated, looking toward Genevieve for orders, their weapons wavering for a crucial fraction of a second.

"Do it, Clara!" I roared, sprinting toward Noah and Sophie. I threw myself across the floor, shielding their small bodies with my own as I frantically worked at the thick black tape binding their mouths. With a sharp rip, the tape came away, and Noah immediately burst into loud, heartbroken crying, burying his face in my jacket. Sophie threw her arms around my neck, her small hands clutching my shoulders so hard it hurt. "Dad! You came!" she sobbed. "We knew you'd come!"

"I've got you. You're safe now," I whispered, kissing the top of their heads before scooping them both up into my arms. Across the room, chaos erupted. Genevieve, realizing her thirty-year empire of crime was literally sitting inside my coat pocket, shrieked in absolute fury and lunged at Clara, trying to grab the barrel of the shotgun. "You ungrateful little bitch! Give me that!" Genevieve screamed, her mask of polite aristocracy completely gone, revealing the rabid, desperate animal beneath.

Clara didn't flinch. With a swift, practiced movement, she clubbed the butt of the shotgun hard against Genevieve’s shoulder, sending the billionaire matriarch sprawling backward onto the Persian rug. The tactical guards raised their weapons, preparing to open fire on Clara, but before they could squeeze the triggers, the red laser dots of three sniper rifles suddenly danced across their chests. From the shattered stained-glass windows of the second-story gallery above, three red-dot sights locked onto the guards' foreheads.

"Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapons and put your hands behind your heads!" a booming voice echoed from the shadows of the upper balcony. Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation stepped out into the light, flanked by a full tactical entry team clad in black and green gear, their assault rifles leveled squarely at Genevieve's mercenaries. The guards looked around, assessed the hopeless tactical situation, and slowly let their submachine guns clatter to the polished wooden floor, raising their hands in surrender.

Genevieve pushed herself up from the floor, her velvet gown stained with dust and ash, her white hair disheveled around her flushed, furious face. She looked up at Agent Miller, then back at me, her chest heaving with venomous hatred. "You think this is over?" she hissed, her voice trembling with impotent rage. "The Sterling name owns the courts, the judges, the entire judicial system! You can arrest me, but by morning, I'll be out of a cell and you'll be nothing more than cold statistics in a local morgue!"

"Not this time, Genevieve," I said, stepping forward with Noah and Sophie safely tucked behind me while Clara kept her shotgun trained firmly on the matriarch. I patted my coat pocket, feeling the solid, undeniable weight of the ledger and the flash drive. "We didn't just bring a key tonight. We brought the whole truth. And the truth is going to serve you a very long, very permanent prison sentence."
