Chapter 5 - The Ultrasound Room Revelation

Diego stepped into the dim exam room without knocking, his face flushed with lingering anger from our confrontation at the café. Behind him, slipping through the doorway with a tight, triumphant smirk, was Paola.
"Well, this is cozy," Diego snapped, crossing his arms as he stood at the foot of the examination table. "What, did you need your doctor to write you a prescription for sympathy, Laura? Or were you hoping to rope her into your little fairy tale?"
I sat up on the exam table, pulling the paper sheet tightly around my chest, completely stunned by their audacity. "Diego? What are you doing here? How did you even get back here?"
"The receptionist tried to stop us," Paola said smoothly, stepping forward and checking her polished fingernails. "But Diego explained that as your legal husband, he has every right to be present for matters concerning potential paternity fraud. We just wanted to make sure you weren't spinning another web of lies for the medical staff."
Diego sneered, stepping closer to the edge of the bed and glaring at the glowing monitor, which still displayed the grayscale image of the gestational sac and the tiny, pulsing heartbeat.
"Perfect," Diego said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Now the doctor can finally tell me—right to my face—how far along this other man’s baby is. Let's hear the medical timeline, Doc. Let's see how long she's been playing me for a fool."
The room fell into an absolute, suffocating dead silence.
Dr. Salinas remained seated at her console. She didn't flinch at Diego’s aggressive tone. She didn't look intimidated by Paola’s designer coat or arrogant posture.
Instead, the doctor slowly turned her rolling chair around to face them. Her expression wasn't angry; it was a mixture of profound professional astonishment and cold, hard disbelief.
She looked at Diego. Then she looked at Paola. And then, slowly, she turned her gaze back to the glowing ultrasound screen, before looking straight into Diego’s eyes.
"Mr. Diego," Dr. Salinas said, her voice quiet, measured, and carrying an unmistakable edge of steel. "Before you open your mouth to accuse your wife of infidelity one more time... you need to look at what is right here on this screen."
Diego scoffed, rolling his eyes and shaking his head. "Oh, please. Don't play games with me, Dr. Salinas. I had a vasectomy. I am sterile. Everyone with basic biology knowledge knows that a sterile man cannot father a child. Unless, of course, Laura found someone else—which she clearly did."
Dr. Salinas stood up slowly from her chair. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to.
"Mr. Garza," the doctor said, her tone clinical and absolute. "Do you remember the post-vasectomy instructions I gave you in this exact room two months ago?"
Diego blinked, momentarily thrown off balance by the change in subject. "Of course I do. Rest for a few days, take ibuprofen, avoid heavy lifting."
"And what was the most critical instruction regarding the effectiveness of the procedure?" Dr. Salinas pressed, stepping closer to him.
Diego frowned, crossing his arms defensively. "You said... something about waiting. About using backup contraception for a few weeks."
"Not a few weeks, Mr. Garza," Dr. Salinas corrected sharply. "I told you explicitly that a vasectomy is not an instantaneous switch. I told you that millions of residual sperm remain stored in the vas deferens and seminal vesicles downstream from the surgical site. I told you that it takes an average of fifteen to twenty ejaculations, followed by a mandatory post-vasectomy semen analysis at the eight-week mark, to confirm zero sperm count."
Diego’s face paled slightly, though he maintained his stubborn glare. "So what? Every man knows that. That doesn't mean—"
"Did you schedule your follow-up semen analysis, Mr. Garza?" Dr. Salinas interrupted, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet interrogation. "Did you bring a sample to our lab two weeks ago as ordered?"
Diego swallowed hard. The defensive swagger in his posture faltered for a fraction of a second. A bead of sweat formed near his hairline.
"I... I was busy with work," Diego stammered, his voice losing its sharp edge. "Paola and I... things were complicated. I didn't get around to dropping off the cup."
Paola’s smile vanished instantly. She turned her head sharply to look at Diego, her eyes widening in sudden alarm. "Diego? What are you talking about? You told me the procedure was 100% effective immediately. You told me you were completely sterile the day we got together!"
Diego shot a panicked look at Paola. "I... I thought it was! Everyone says vasectomies make you sterile!"
Dr. Salinas let out a cold, incredulous breath, shaking her head.
"Ignorance of biology, combined with flagrant disobedience of direct medical instructions, is a dangerous combination, Mr. Garza," Dr. Salinas said. She pointed a finger firmly at the ultrasound monitor, and then at the electronic chart on her desk. "Your wife is eight weeks pregnant. Based on the gestational age and fetal development markers, conception occurred precisely nine weeks ago."
Diego’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed onto the metal railing of a medical cart to steady himself, his face draining of all color until he looked like a ghost.
"Nine weeks..." he whispered. "That... that was right before..."
"That was right before you walked out of this office believing you were invincible," Dr. Salinas finished for him. She looked him dead in the eye, her expression unyielding. "Your wife did not cheat on you, Mr. Garza. The baby she is carrying—the child you slandered, abandoned, and tried to frame as an act of betrayal—is 100% biologically yours. It was conceived during the exact window of residual fertility that I warned you about, and that you recklessly ignored."
The words echoed in the small exam room like thunder.

Paola stepped back, her hand flying to her mouth, staring at Diego as if he had just turned into a monster. "You lied to me," she breathed, her voice trembling with horror and betrayal. "You told me you couldn't have kids! You told me your divorce was because she cheated! You lied about everything!"
Diego didn't answer Paola. He stood frozen, his eyes wide and vacant, staring blindly at the glowing ultrasound screen where a tiny, strong heart continued to beat, oblivious to the absolute destruction its existence had just brought down upon his life.
