Chapter 6 - The Tables Turn

The silence in Dr. Salinas’s exam room was so heavy you could hear the faint hum of the computer fan spinning against the wall.

Diego stood paralyzed, his fingers gripping the metal cart so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. The confident, smug man who had walked into the clinic just minutes before demanding a public humiliation of his wife had completely evaporated, replaced by a pathetic, trembling shell of a human being.

Paola’s face, which had been painted with polite superiority moments earlier, was now twisted in utter panic and disgust.

"Diego," she whispered, her voice shrill and shaking. "Tell me she's lying. Tell me this is some kind of sick joke you two planned together to trap you."

Diego didn't look at her. He couldn't. His hollow, terror-filled eyes were locked entirely on me as I sat up on the examination table, slowly pulling my legs down and adjusting my dress. The tears that had burned my eyes earlier were gone, replaced by an armor of cold, untouchable dignity.

"It’s not a joke, Paola," I said, my voice cutting through the tense air like broken glass. "Your new boyfriend—the man you wrecked a marriage for, the man who called me a whore in our own kitchen and let his mother treat me like garbage—was simply too lazy and too arrogant to follow basic medical instructions."

Paola recoiled as if I had struck her across the face. She turned her blazing glare onto Diego, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom.

"You miserable liar," she hissed, her voice rising in pitch. "You told me your wife was unfaithful! You told me you were completely fixed months ago! You trapped me into leaving my apartment, playing stepfamily to a disaster, and now I find out you're having a baby with your wife anyway?!"

"Paola, wait, let me explain—" Diego stammered, finally finding his voice, raising a hand in a desperate, pleading gesture. "I didn't know! I swear to God, the doctor said—"

"The doctor told you to bring in a sample!" Paola screamed, ignoring the quiet hospital environment entirely. "You told me you didn't need to! You said you were shooting blanks! I am not raising another man's baby—and I sure as hell am not staying with a lying, broke coward who destroys his own life out of sheer stupidity!"

With a violent shove, Paola pushed past Diego, yanked open the exam room door, and stormed down the hallway, her heels clacking furiously against the floor tiles until the main office doors swung shut behind her.

Diego was left standing alone in the center of the room, abandoned by the very woman he had traded eight years of loyalty for.

He slowly turned his head back toward me. His lower lip quivered. The arrogance that had defined his posture all afternoon had completely dissolved into a pathetic, desperate puddle of regret.

"Laura..." he whispered, taking a hesitant step forward, his hand outstretched. "Lauri, please... I didn't know. You have to believe me. I was angry, I was confused, my head was messed up with work and money... I made a mistake."

I slid off the exam table, standing tall and steady on my own two feet. I didn't back away from him, but I looked down at him with an expression of such profound indifference that it hurt him far more than any scream could have.

"A mistake, Diego?" I asked quietly. "A mistake is forgetting to buy milk on the way home. A mistake is missing an exit on the highway." I pointed a finger toward his chest. "Calling your wife a whore, running to your lover, letting your mother humiliate me in my own home, posting public lies on social media to destroy my reputation, and drawing up legal contracts to extort me—that wasn't a mistake. That was your true character."

Diego stumbled back as if my words were physical punches. "Lauri, we can fix this. We're husband and wife. Eight years! We can go home together. We can build our nursery, just like we always wanted. We're going to have a baby!"

I let out a cold, humorless laugh.

"The only place you're going, Diego, is back to the suitcase your mother packed for you," I said firmly. "Because our marriage ended the moment you decided to believe the worst in me instead of standing by my side."

Dr. Salinas stood quietly by her desk, folding her arms over her white lab coat. She didn't intervene, but her eyes watched Diego with clinical disdain.

"Mr. Garza," Dr. Salinas said quietly, pointing toward the exit. "I suggest you leave my clinic immediately. Your presence is distressing my patient, and further emotional stress could jeopardize a healthy pregnancy."

Diego looked back and forth between the doctor and me, realizing with agonizing clarity that he had lost everything. He had thrown away a loving wife, a loyal home, and his own flesh and blood, all because of his own reckless negligence and poisoned ego.

With his head hung low in absolute shame, Diego turned around and shuffled out of the exam room, the door clicking softly shut behind him.
