Chapter 9 - The Last Stand at the Threshold

The reinforced steel door of the stairwell buckled under a vicious kick from the outside. Before Dorian’s security detail could react, three armed men—desperate, unhinged corporate mercenaries left stranded by the sudden collapse of Aegis Holdings—burst onto the floor, their black tactical vests and submachine guns raised in blind, suicidal panic. They didn’t care about money anymore; they wanted blood, vengeance, and a high-profile hostage to negotiate safe passage out of the city. “Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them!” the lead mercenary roared, sweeping the barrel of his weapon across the room toward Dorian and Marin. Titan was instantly on his feet, his massive muscled body coiling like a steel spring, a terrifying, guttural growl vibrating through the floorboards that made the mercenaries hesitate for a fraction of a second. That fraction of a second was all Dorian Vance required. Moving with lightning speed, Dorian drew his concealed firearm from his holster, firing two precise, calculated shots that instantly neutralized the lead gunman before he could squeeze his trigger. Simultaneously, the two Vance Tower security guards stationed in the corridor poured through the broken doorway, their tactical training taking over as they tackled the remaining two mercenaries to the polished marble floor, disarming them in a flurry of disciplined violence. The entire skirmish lasted less than five seconds. Smoke hung lazily in the air from the discharged weapons, mixing with the scent of ozone and spilled coffee. Marin sat frozen at the terminal, her breathing shallow, her eyes wide as she looked at Dorian, who stood calmly amidst the chaos, his weapon still raised until he confirmed the threat was entirely eliminated. He holstered his gun instantly, stepping back through the broken shards of the doorway to kneel beside her chair. “Are you hurt?” Dorian asked, his voice sharp with a raw, protective urgency that shattered his usual untouchable facade. Marin shook her head slowly, reaching out to steady her hand against his forearm. The solid warmth of his skin grounded her, anchoring her spirit against the lingering ghosts of trauma. “No,” she whispered, a fierce, genuine smile breaking through her exhaustion. “I’m not hurt at all.” Titan trotted over, pressing his heavy head firmly against Marin’s lap as if to officially verify that the danger had passed. Dorian looked down at the dog, then back up at Marin, realizing with sudden, undeniable clarity that the quiet cleaning woman had completely rewritten his world.
