Chapter 14 - The Poisoned Legacy

The words hung in the freezing air of the sub-basement, cutting through the blaring red strobe lights and the screaming sirens like a razor-sharp blade.

*Those little girls... they aren't even yours.*

For one terrifying second, the world stopped spinning. The relentless roar of the alarms faded into a distant, muffled hum. My grip on Julian’s lapels slackened slightly, the sheer absurdity and malice of his claim crashing against the protective walls I had built around my daughters.

"You're lying," I whispered, my voice a lethal, vibrating growl as I slammed his head back against the concrete floor, ignoring the sickening thud. "If you lie to me again, Julian, I swear to God I will bury you so deep under this foundation that no one will ever find your bones."

Julian let out a wet, raspy laugh, blood staining his teeth. "Am I? Check the encrypted drive, Dante. Elena wasn't the saint you worshiped every night with a glass of whiskey. She had debts. Family debts. And she made arrangements with our family long before she ever married you to secure the Caruso fortune. Those twins carry Vance blood, not Caruso blood."

"Stop listening to him, Dante!"

Elise’s voice cut through the toxic haze of my rising panic like a beacon of pure light. She knelt beside us on the cold floor, her small, warm hand gripping my arm with an urgent, fierce strength. Her brown eyes searched my face, holding me anchored to reality. "He's trying to break you. He knows he's lost, so he's trying to destroy you from the inside out using psychological warfare. Don't give him the satisfaction."

I looked down at Elise. Her steady, unwavering gaze washed over me, slowly clearing the red mist of fury that had threatened to blind me. She believed in me. She believed in the truth.

I took a slow, deep breath, loosening my grip on Julian’s chest. I stood up slowly, towering over him as if he were nothing more than a piece of trash littering my floor.

"Declan," I commanded, my voice ice-cold and utterly devoid of emotion. "Handcuff him. Pack him into an unmarked transport vehicle and take him to the federal holding facility upstate. Make sure he is held under maximum security with zero outside communication. If he so much as breathes a word to the media, make sure his cell vanishes from the registry."

"Understood, sir," Declan snapped crisply, hauling Julian to his feet as the older man thrashed and cursed like a cornered animal.

As Declan dragged Julian down the long corridor, his frantic screams echoed off the steel walls. *"You can't hide from the truth, Caruso! The papers will destroy you!"*

Once the heavy elevator doors slid shut, sealing Julian away, absolute silence settled over the sub-basement. Only the rhythmic hum of the server racks remained.

I stood staring down at the open briefcase resting on the desk. My hands were trembling slightly—not from fear, but from the residual adrenaline of a war that had spanned years.

Elise stood beside me, her shoulder pressing gently against mine. Without a word, she reached down, picked up the encrypted hard drive Julian had dropped, and slid it into her pocket without even looking at the files.

"You don't need to read them," she said softly, her voice filled with a profound, tender certainty. "Biology doesn't make a father, Dante. You are Maisie and Rosie’s father. You are the one who stays awake in the dark, the one who protects them, the one who loves them. Nothing on a piece of paper can ever change that."

May you like

I turned to look at her, the last remaining ice around my guarded heart finally shattering completely. Without thinking, I pulled her into my arms, burying my face in the soft crook of her neck as she wrapped her arms tightly around my waist, holding me together when I had almost fallen apart.
