Chapter 20 - The First Light of Forever

The morning sun rose over the Manhattan skyline with breathtaking clarity, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of amber, rose, and gold. The crisp autumn air carried the fresh scent of rain-washed pavement, and the city below hummed with the vibrant energy of a new day.
Up in the east wing nursery, the morning routine was already underway in a symphony of joyful chaos. Maisie and Rosie were sitting up in their cribs, babbling happily as they played with their favorite yellow rubber kitchen glove, which Elise had once again transformed into a bouncing, theatrical puppet.
I stood leaning against the open doorway, holding a mug of black coffee, watching them with a deep, unbreakable peace settling into my chest for the first time in four years. The ghosts of the past—Elena’s tragic accident, Clara’s unhinged betrayal, the corporate warfare of the Vance brothers—felt distant now, relegated to the ashes of a life I had finally left behind.
Elise walked out of the connecting nursery bathroom, wearing a soft cream knit sweater and dark trousers, her hair falling in gentle waves around her shoulders. She caught me watching her and smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that made my chest ache with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love.
"They slept through the entire night," Elise whispered softly, walking over to stand beside me in the doorway. "Not a single tear. They're finally safe, Dante."
I set my coffee mug down on the antique side table, reached out, and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. Her skin was warm, her eyes shining with unshed tears of joy.
"They're safe," I agreed, my voice thick with emotion. "And so am I."
Elise looked up at me, her smile turning playful as she tilted her head. "Does this mean the ruthless billionaire CEO is finally going to take a day off and help me feed the twins breakfast?"
"Only if you promise to wear the yellow rubber gloves and do the duck walk," I replied, a rare, genuine smile breaking across my face as I pulled her close against my chest, our lips meeting in a sweet, lingering kiss that tasted like a brand new beginning.
Outside the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate, the city of Manhattan stretched out endlessly beneath the golden morning light, vibrant and full of promise. But inside this room, standing beside the woman who had brought light back into my dark world and laughter back to my daughters, I knew that the darkest chapters of our lives were finally closed forever.

The empire I had built was secure. But the family we were building together was the only legacy that truly mattered.
