Chapter 13 - THE PAPER TRAIL OF REVENGE

Before my father could recover his tongue, the sharp, authoritative ding of the elevator bell echoed down the fourth-floor hallway, followed by the crisp sound of heavy-soled shoes marching toward my door. Two building security guards, both broad-shouldered and wearing official uniforms, rounded the corner and strode straight to my open doorway.
“Everything alright here, Miss Evans?” the lead guard asked, his eyes immediately locking onto my father’s rigid posture and mud-stained boots.
“Everything is fine now,” I said calmly, never breaking eye contact with the man who had terrorized my youth. “However, this individual is an uninvited trespasser who has refused multiple requests to leave my private residence. I want him escorted off the premises immediately, and a formal trespass notice filed with the management office.”
My father’s face flushed a deep, mottled purple. “You arrogant little witch!” he roared, lunging forward a step before the two guards instantly moved in, grabbing him firmly by both arms and pinning him back. “Let go of me! Do you know who I am? I’m her father! This is a family matter!”
“It’s not a family matter, sir; it’s a trespassing matter,” the guard said coolly, twisting my father’s arm just enough to signal compliance without breaking bone. “You heard the resident. Move it.”
“Clara! You’ll regret this!” my father screamed, his voice echoing off the apartment walls as the guards dragged him backward out the door and down the carpeted hallway toward the elevators. “You can’t do this to your own flesh and blood! Brent is going to hear about this! We’ll destroy you!”
The heavy oak door swung shut with a muffled click as the automatic latch engaged, sealing out his enraged shrieks.
Wren let out a long, shuddering breath, her knees buckling slightly as she leaned against the kitchen counter. The wooden spoon slipped from her hand, clattering loudly against the linoleum. I walked over, wrapped my arm around her shaking shoulders, and led her back to the couch.
“He’s gone,” I murmured, rubbing her back. “He’s never coming back here again. You’re safe.”
“How did he even find you?” Wren whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “We didn’t give anyone our address.”
“Public records,” I said, my mind racing as I calculated the implications. When I bought the condo six months ago, I had used a limited liability company to shield my name, but my lawyer had warned me that persistent individuals could sometimes pierce through public registries if they hired a private investigator. And my father, desperate and broke, must have scraped together every last penny to hire someone to track me down.
Which meant he wasn’t just angry—he was completely out of options.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It wasn’t a call; it was an email notification from my corporate inbox. I picked it up and tapped the screen.
The sender’s name made my breath catch in my throat: *HR Department – Apex Global Logistics.*
I opened the email.
*Dear Ms. Evans, We are writing to inform you that our office received a formal inquiry this morning from an individual claiming to be your legal guardian/family representative, alleging serious financial improprieties and ethical misconduct during your tenure as Senior Financial Analyst...*

My blood turned to ice water. He hadn’t just come to my home to scream at me. He had launched a preemptive strike against my career.
