Chapter 17 - THE FINAL AUDIT

The courtroom of the Federal District Court was cold, smelling of polished mahogany, old paper, and institutional floor wax. The high vaulted ceilings echoed with the quiet rustle of legal briefs and the muted murmurs of court officers preparing for the morning docket.
I sat at the prosecution’s auxiliary table alongside Marcus Sterling and Apex Global’s chief legal counsel. Across the aisle, sitting slumped and defeated at the defense table, was my father and my brother.
My father looked ten years older than he had a week ago. His shoulders were caved in, his face gray and sunken, wearing a cheap, ill-fitting suit that hung loosely off his shrunken frame. Brent sat beside him, staring blankly at the polished wooden table, refusing to look up or meet anyone's eyes.
The federal prosecutor had laid out an airtight case: industrial espionage, unauthorized computer access, extortion, and the submission of falsified documents to a regulatory body. The evidence was absolute, unyielding, and entirely damning.
The federal judge, a stern-faced woman with iron-gray hair and piercing eyes, looked down from her elevated bench, reviewing the final stack of documents detailing the damages and the corporate impact report.
“Mr. Arthur Evans, Mr. Brent Evans,” the judge’s voice rang clear and resonant through the silent courtroom. “The court has reviewed the complete evidentiary record, including the forensic IT logs, financial transcripts, and formal corporate affidavits. The charges brought against you by Apex Global Logistics and Ms. Clara Evans are severe, carrying mandatory federal sentencing guidelines for corporate data sabotage.”
My father swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the defense table. He looked up toward the bench, opening his mouth as if to offer one last desperate excuse, one final plea of paternal entitlement.
“Your Honor,” my father croaked, his voice cracking painfully. “We are... we are her family. There was a misunderstanding. She cut us off, she abandoned her obligations to the household—we were just trying to get what was rightfully ours...”
The judge raised a single hand, cutting him off mid-sentence with an expression of absolute disdain.
“Mr. Evans,” the judge said, her voice dropping to a chilling, authoritative register. “This court does not recognize familial entitlement as a legal defense against federal extortion and data theft. The evidence demonstrates a prolonged, malicious campaign of harassment and financial sabotage directed against an individual who has already given far more than any family member had a right to demand.”
My father shrank back into his chair, the last remnants of his blustering arrogance finally crumbling into dust.
“In light of the defendants' cooperation with plea negotiations and lack of prior federal records,” the judge continued, “the court sentences Arthur Evans to three years of probation, mandatory community service, and full financial restitution to Apex Global for legal fees. Brent Evans is sentenced to two years of federal probation, electronic monitoring, and thirty days in county jail for unauthorized system access.”
The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing *crack*.
