Chapter 13 - Echoes in the Foyer

"Elena! Look who decided to finally grace us with her presence."

Graham’s voice echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer. He was standing casually by the mahogany staircase, holding a brightly wrapped toy box, while five-year-old Nora and Miles stood behind him, looking confused and slightly frightened, clutching each other’s hands.

"Get away from my children," I snarled, stepping into the hallway, raising the heavy metal steering wheel lock like a baseball bat. My eyes blazed with a fury that made Graham take an involuntary half-step back.

"Now, is that any way to greet your former husband?" Graham smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. His suit was rumpled, his hair uncharacteristically messy, the mask of the successful corporate architect completely slipping away to reveal the desperate, broken man underneath. "I was just getting acquainted with my kids. Oh, excuse me—*our* kids. Though let's be honest, Elena, with your history of emotional instability, do you really think a judge is going to let you keep primary custody once I show them your medical records from six years ago?"

"You delusional sociopath," I hissed, taking a slow, deliberate step toward him. "You staged a public humiliation when I was twelve days postpartum. You manipulated a thirteen-year-old girl into doing your dirty work. You think you can waltz back into my house and threaten my family?"

"I’m not threatening anyone," Graham chuckled darkly, taking a step closer to Nora and Miles. The twins whimpered, shrinking back against the wall. "I’m just reclaiming what’s mine. My firm is gone, my reputation is in the toilet, and it’s all because of your little revenge fantasy. If I’m going down, Elena, I’m taking your entire world with me."

"Don't you dare touch them!" I screamed, lunging forward.

Before Graham could grab Nora’s arm, the front door flew open behind me with a deafening crash, followed by the heavy boots of Dallas police officers swarming the hallway.

"Dallas Police! Drop the box, put your hands behind your head, and get on the ground *now*!"

Three officers, service weapons drawn, rushed into the foyer. The red and blue lights from the cruisers outside flashed wildly through the windows, painting the walls in an apocalyptic strobe effect.

Graham froze, his hands hovering in the air. For a split second, I saw the absolute terror wash over his face—the realization that his charm, his money, and his manipulation tactics couldn't save him from cold, hard reality.

"Mr. Vance, do it now or you will be tasered!" the lead officer roared, slamming Graham face-first against the mahogany wall, snapping the steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

As they dragged him toward the door, Graham twisted his neck, glaring back at me with pure venom. "You haven't won, Elena! This isn't over!"

May you like

"No, Graham," I whispered, lowering the metal bar as the adrenaline finally began to ebb, leaving my limbs shaking uncontrollably. "It’s over. You just don't know it yet."
