Chapter 16 - The Unwelcome Heir

The door swung open, the hinges protesting softly against the crisp morning air. Standing on the porch was not Graham, nor one of his flunkies, but a man I hadn't seen in over a decade.

Julian Vance. Graham and Marcus’s estranged uncle, a man who lived entirely in the shadows of high-stakes corporate real estate and offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands. He wore a charcoal wool coat, silver hair combed back meticulously, and cold, calculating eyes that looked as though they belonged to a shark disguised in human skin.

"Elena," Julian said smoothly, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that commanded attention. "It’s been a long time. Won't you invite an old uncle inside?"

I didn't move an inch. I kept my hand firmly on the doorframe, blocking the threshold completely. "You have no business here, Julian. If you’re here on Graham’s behalf, you’re wasting your time. He’s facing federal indictment and is currently sitting in a holding cell."

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle, pulling a pair of leather gloves off his hands. "Graham is a fool. He always was. He let his ego cloud his judgment, and now he’s paying the price for it. I didn't come here to bail him out, Elena. I came here to talk business."

"I have no business with any member of the Vance family," I replied coldly, starting to close the door.

Julian’s hand shot out, catching the edge of the door before it could latch, his grip surprisingly strong for a man his age. "Wait. Don't be so hasty to slam the door in the face of the only person who can offer you what you actually want."

"And what is that?" I challenged, staring him down without blinking.

"Total, absolute closure," Julian said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Graham is trying to drag this out, threatening to contest custody, threatening to drag your name through the mud during the trial. But I control the family trust. And more importantly, I control Graham’s remaining assets. If you sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding certain... family financial matters outside of what’s in your book, I will cut Graham off entirely. I will strip him of his inheritance, force him to accept a plea deal without contest, and ensure he never, ever contacts you or your children again."

I stared at him, my mind racing. It was an offer written by the devil himself—silence in exchange for permanent peace.

"And why would you do that?" I asked suspiciously. "Graham is your nephew."

"Graham is a liability," Julian replied coldly, his eyes flashing with ruthless ambition. "And in my world, liabilities are eliminated. Think about it, Elena. Do you want a prolonged legal war that drags your children through the media circus, or do you want this nightmare to end today, permanently?"
