Chapter 23 - The Shadow in the Mirror

Claire whipped around, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The shadows in the corner of the study seemed to twist and elongate, stretching across the Persian rug like clutching fingers.

"Who's there?" Claire demanded, her voice cracking slightly despite her attempt to sound fierce. She gripped the heavy silver spoon like a weapon, stepping backward until her lower back pressed firmly against the edge of the mahogany desk.

Silence answered her. The kind of heavy, suffocating silence that felt alive, pregnant with malice.

Through the tall window, the moonlight caught a faint wisp of movement near the bookshelf. A silhouette—tall, rigid, draped in a dark, sweeping coat—stood motionless between the rows of leather-bound law books. The figure didn't breathe, didn't shift, but radiated an aura of pure, concentrated venom.

"I know you're there," Claire said, her hands trembling as she reached blindly behind her along the desk, searching for the panic button wired directly to local law enforcement and Mark's bedside terminal. Her fingers brushed against the smooth plastic casing. She pressed it down hard—once, twice, three times.

Nothing happened. No silent alarm chimed. No red light blinked into life. The button was dead.

The silhouette in the corner let out a low, raspy chuckle—a dry, rattling sound that sent a fresh wave of nausea rolling through Claire’s stomach. Slowly, the figure stepped out of the shadows and into the pool of silver moonlight.

It wasn't Evelyn.

Claire blinked hard, her breath catching in her throat as the face came into focus. It was a woman, but younger than Evelyn—though bearing the exact same sharp, predatory cheekbones, the same glacial blue eyes, and the same cruel, downturned smirk. It was Sarah, Evelyn’s former personal assistant and legal secretary, a woman who had vanished into thin air the day the federal indictment came down against the Sterling estate.

"Surprised to see me, Claire?" Sarah’s voice was smooth, dripping with synthetic sweetness that masked a terrifying underlying menace. She stepped closer, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. *Tap. Tap. Tap.*

"Sarah," Claire breathed, gripping the edge of the desk tighter. "You have a federal warrant out for your arrest. If you take one more step, the police—"

"The police?" Sarah interrupted with a sharp, derisive laugh. "Oh, Claire. Sweet, naive, sheltered Claire. Do you honestly believe the police can protect you from what's coming? You thought you won, didn't you? You and your little husband, parading around with your charity foundations and your happy little press conferences. You tore down the Sterling name, brick by brick. But you forgot one fundamental rule of blood: you can't wash away what's in your veins."

"Get out of my house," Claire said, her voice dropping an octave, finding a sudden, steel-hard core of fury beneath her fear. "You broke in. You are trespassing. And I am telling you right now, Mark is just down the hall."

"Mark?" Sarah smiled, a sickening display of teeth. "Oh, darling, Mark is sleeping very, very soundly right now. We took the liberty of ensuring he won't be disturbing us for quite some time. A little pharmaceutical assistance goes a long way when you have the right connections."

Ice flooded Claire’s veins. *Mark.*

"What did you do to him?" Claire hissed, lunging forward, but Sarah was faster.

With a flick of her wrist, Sarah pulled a sleek, heavy leather-bound ledger from beneath her coat and slammed it down onto the desk right in front of Claire. It was an original ledger—the exact duplicate of the black-market asset-transfer ledger that Claire had used to put Evelyn away.

"Evelyn sends her regards," Sarah whispered, leaning in so close that Claire could smell the metallic tang of cheap perfume and winter frost. "And she wants you to know that the game isn't over just because the board got knocked down. She's coming back for everything. And this time, there won't be any survivors."

Before Claire could scream, Sarah pulled a small aerosol canister from her coat, spraying a thick, sweet-smelling mist directly into Claire’s face. The world exploded into a blinding flash of white, then dissolved instantly into total, suffocating blackness.
