Chapter 28 - The Turning Tide

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl.
Claire closed her eyes, bracing for the impact.
*CRASH!*
The heavy silver cane struck the wooden chair with bone-splintering force, missing Claire’s head by mere inches as she desperately jerked her body to the side. The impact shattered the armrest, sending wooden splinters flying across the damp floor.
Before Evelyn could pull the cane back for a second strike, Mark slammed into her with devastating force. The elderly woman was thrown backward, tumbling hard against the damp brick wall and sliding down into a crumpled heap on the floor, her silver cane clattering away into the shadows.
"Claire!" Mark dropped to his knees beside her, his hands frantically working at the thick zip-ties binding her wrists. "Are you okay? Did she hurt you?"
"I'm... I'm okay," Claire gasped, tears of relief finally spilling over her lashes as the plastic ties snapped under Mark’s desperate pull. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "You found me. You actually found me."
"I told you," Mark whispered fiercely, holding her as tight as he possibly could, pressing a rapid succession of kisses to her hair and cheek. "Nobody takes you from me. Nobody."
Across the room, a low, raspy groan echoed from the floor.
Evelyn pushed herself up onto her elbows, her white hair matted with dust and sweat, her glacial blue eyes burning with an unholy, defeated fury. She glared at them, her chest heaving as she spat a mouthful of blood onto the concrete.
"You think this... this changes anything?" Evelyn rasped, her voice trembling with impotent rage. "You can beat me... you can lock me in a cage... but the Sterling name... our blood... will always own you."
"Your blood is poison, Evelyn," Claire said, standing up slowly with Mark’s arm securely around her waist, looking down at the broken, pathetic old woman who had terrorized her entire life. "And we just cured the infection."
Heavy footsteps echoed from the stairwell above, accompanied by the flashing red and blue lights of local police cruisers and federal marshals flooding the abandoned mill. Marcus led the charge, flanked by a half-dozen heavily armed officers who swarmed into the sub-basement with guns drawn.
"Clear!" one of the officers shouted, securing the area.
Marcus stepped forward, taking in the ruined room, the unconscious Sarah being dragged up the stairs in handcuffs, and finally, Evelyn Sterling slumped against the brick wall.
The aging lawyer looked down at Evelyn with a cold, expressionless gaze. "It's over, Evelyn. No appeals. No loopholes. The federal penitentiary has a very special isolation wing waiting just for you."
May you like
Evelyn didn't answer. She merely closed her eyes, her lips moving in a silent, venomous curse as the officers hauled her to her feet and led her away into the darkness.
