Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING OF THE GHOST

The air in the master suite grew heavy, charged with a static electricity so intense that Daniel could feel the hairs on the back of his neck standing up. He rose slowly from the floor, his joints popping in the oppressive silence, his eyes locked onto the figure standing near the edge of the bed.
Vanessa Vance. Dressed in a pristine cream-colored cashmere sweater and designer trousers, her blond hair styled in loose, expensive waves. She looked like she had just stepped out of the pages of *Architectural Digest*. But right now, the polished veneer of the society hostess was cracking down the middle, revealing the panicked, cornered predator underneath.
"Vanessa," Daniel said. His voice was dangerously quiet, stripped of all warmth, carrying a lethal, controlled fury that made the room’s temperature seem to drop ten degrees.
Vanessa’s chest heaved rapidly beneath her cashmere sweater. She swallowed hard, her throat bobbing, but no words came out. Her eyes darted frantically from Daniel’s stony face down to the dark, gaping hole in the wardrobe wall, and finally to the skeletal, broken figure of Emily lying crumpled on the floor.
"You're awfully quiet," Daniel whispered, taking one deliberate step out of the walk-in closet and onto the bedroom carpet. "Usually, when a man comes home and finds his ex-wife—whom he hasn't seen in three years—shattering out of a secret compartment behind our wardrobe, there are questions. There’s screaming. There’s panic."
He took another step forward. Vanessa took a matching step backward, her heel catching the edge of the plush Persian rug, causing her to stumble slightly before regaining her balance against the edge of the mahogany dresser.
"Daniel... honey... let me explain," Vanessa finally choked out, her voice pitching up into a frantic, breathless treble. Her manicured hands fluttered in front of her chest in a placating gesture. "I—I know how this looks. I swear to God, it’s a misunderstanding—"
"A misunderstanding?" Daniel roared. The control snapped, shattering like cheap glass.
The sound of his voice echoed through the sprawling mansion like a gunshot. On the floor of the closet, Noah whimpered, curling himself defensively around Emily’s lifeless-looking legs.
"She was locked behind a wall, Vanessa!" Daniel screamed, lunging across the bedroom with blinding speed. Before Vanessa could duck or scramble away, Daniel closed the distance, his hand shooting out to grab the front of her expensive cashmere sweater.
He didn't hesitate. With a roar of unadulterated rage, Daniel drove his fist forward, striking Vanessa square in the jaw.
The impact sent a sickening crunch through the air. Vanessa’s head snapped violently to the side, her pristine hair flying across her face as the momentum of the blow lifted her entirely off her feet. She slammed backward into the heavy mahogany dresser, scattering expensive perfume bottles, crystal decanters, and silver trays across the hardwood floor with a deafening crash.
She hit the floor hard, gasping for air, blood welling instantly from a split lip.
"Daniel! Stop!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching her bruised jaw with one hand as she scrambled backward on her elbows, her designer shoes kicking uselessly at the air. "Please, Daniel, don't—!"
"You locked her in there!" Daniel snarled, standing over her like an executioner, his chest heaving, his knuckles bruised and bleeding from the impact. "You trapped the mother of my child inside a concrete tomb in our own home! How long, Vanessa?! *HOW LONG?!*"
When Vanessa tried to scramble up onto her knees, her foot slipping on a spilled bottle of Chanel perfume, Daniel didn't show an ounce of mercy. He grabbed her by the collar of her ruined sweater and hauled her upright, his face inches from hers.
"Answer me!" he bellowed, shaking her violently.
When she squeezed her eyes shut and whimpered, refusing to speak, Daniel’s arm drew back again. With a furious, open-handed slap, he struck her across the face. The deafening crack echoed off the walls, sending Vanessa spinning backward into a nearby velvet armchair, where she collapsed in a sobbing, broken heap, clutching her bleeding face.
Daniel stood over her, breathing heavily, his hands trembling violently. For a second, the red mist of fury clouded his vision so completely that he couldn't even process the reality of what he had just done. He, Daniel Vance—a man who prided himself on his civility, his control, his status—had just violently assaulted his own wife.
But as the echoes of the violence faded, a terrifying realization slammed into him.
Violent as his actions were, they paled in comparison to the horror of what Vanessa had done.
Slowly, heavily, Daniel turned away from the sobbing woman in the armchair and walked back into the dim, dust-choked alcove of the walk-in closet.
Emily was still lying on the floor, her eyes half-closed, her chest rising and falling in shallow, agonizingly slow intervals. Noah was kneeling beside her, crying softly, stroking her tangled hair with dirty fingers.
"Daddy," Noah whispered, looking up at Daniel with eyes that held too much sorrow for an eight-year-old boy. "Mommy is so cold. We need a doctor. Right now."
"I'm calling 911," Daniel said, his voice cracking as he pulled his cell phone from his pocket with shaking fingers.
He dialed the emergency number, his eyes never leaving Emily’s face. But as he waited for the dispatcher to pick up, a subtle movement caught his peripheral vision.
Emily was trying to raise her head. Her dry, cracked lips were parting, attempting to form words.
Daniel dropped to his knees, pressing his ear close to her mouth, ignoring the ringing phone in his hand.
"Daniel..." she wheezed, her fingers suddenly shooting out with surprising, desperate strength, grabbing the fabric of his sleeve. She wasn't looking at him. Her bloodshot, terror-filled eyes were staring past his shoulder, fixing with absolute horror on the doorway of the closet.

She wasn't just afraid of what had happened. She was terrified of something that was still to come.
