Chapter 8 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EMPIRE

*BANG! FLASH!*
A blinding white light filled the subterranean hallway, followed instantly by the thunderous roar of concussive flashbang grenades echoing off the concrete walls.
"FBI! FEDERAL AGENTS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW!"
The roar of tactical officers filled the air. Heavy boots slammed against the concrete as a dozen heavily armed SWAT operators in full combat gear swarmed down the hallway, their assault rifles raised, lasers painting red dots across Julian Reed’s chest.
Julian froze, the smartphone slipping from his fingers and clattering uselessly against the concrete floor. The arrogant, untouchable smirk vanished from his face in a fraction of a second, replaced by a look of abject, paralyzing shock.
"Don't move! Hands behind your back! Down on the deck!" a massive SWAT operator roared, tackling Julian violently to the floor, pinning his knee into the back of the corporate executive's neck and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.
Julian grunted, his face pressed hard against the cold concrete as he was yanked roughly to his feet. "You can't do this! Do you know who I am?! I want my lawyer! This is an illegal entrapment!"
"Save it for the judge, pal," the lead agent barked, shoving Julian toward the elevator bank where Detective Vance stood watching with a grim, satisfied smile.
Daniel didn't move. He stood in the center of the hallway, watching as the man who had tried to destroy his life, steal his fortune, and murder his family was dragged away in cuffs like a common criminal. The crushing weight that had been pressing down on his chest for the past twenty-four hours finally began to lift, dissolving into the cool, rushing air of the hallway.
Detective Vance walked over, stopping a few feet away from Daniel, holding a sealed evidence bag containing the fallen smartphone and the silver data-drive.
"Good timing, Daniel," Detective Vance said, a faint hint of approval in his tone. "That data-drive just auto-synced the final offshore routing records to our federal mirror server. We have the complete financial trail. Julian and Vanessa are looking at a minimum of twenty-five years to life without parole for corporate fraud, conspiracy, and attempted kidnapping-murder."
Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath, running a hand over his face. "And Vanessa?"
"She broke down the second we played her Julian’s intercepted audio calls from an hour ago," Detective Vance replied, shaking his head. "Julian was planning to ditch her in the Cayman Islands with nothing once the transfer cleared. She realized she was taking the fall for a man who didn't give a damn about her. She’s singing like a canary—giving us every detail of how they built the wall, how they forged Emily’s disappearance, and where they hid the remaining assets."
Daniel nodded slowly, the adrenaline finally beginning to drain from his system, leaving a profound, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake.
"I need to go back to the hospital," Daniel said quietly.

"Go," Detective Vance nodded, patting him on the shoulder. "Your family is waiting for you, Daniel. It’s finally over."
