Chapter 4 - The Shadows Gather

I held the phone screen in front of Mark’s face. "Who is this?"

Mark’s face went completely ash-white. He grabbed the phone from my hand, his knuckles turning white as he stared at the text. "Where did you get this?"

"It just came to my phone!" I yelled. "Who is threatening our daughter, Mark? Who did you take money from?"

Mark collapsed into one of the kitchen barstools, burying his face in his hands. The confident, control-freak front he had maintained for years disintegrated into raw panic.

"His name is Vance," Mark whispered, his voice trembling. "He runs a high-interest private lending firm. When the tech startup collapsed, I was desperate. The bank denied my loan application. Vance gave me fifty grand to cover the initial loss... but the interest rate is forty percent. Every month I fall behind, the penalty doubles."

"You took money from a loan shark," I stated, the words heavy and surreal. "And you used our home address?"

"He already knew where we lived," Mark whimpered. "Kristen introduced me to him. Vance is one of her old acquaintances."

The pieces of the nightmare were clicking together. Kristen hadn't just suggested a daycare; she had orchestrated a trap. She brought Mark into contact with a predator, leveraged his financial panic, and then used our house as the engine to pay off a debt that she likely had a stake in.

"Where are the family photos, Mark?" I asked, a sudden awful thought striking me.

"They're in the garage," Mark said softly. "In a storage bin."

"Go get them," I said, my voice dropping to a low, lethal register. "Put them back up on the walls. All of them. Right now."

"Nora, please—"

"GET THEM!" I screamed.

Mark flinched, stood up, and hurried out toward the garage.

I walked up the stairs to June’s room. She was sitting on her bed, her knees pulled to her chest, listening to the muffled shouting below.

"Mom?" she asked, her voice small. "Is Dad going to jail?"

I sat on the edge of her bed and wrapped my arms around her. "I won't let anything happen to you, June. Pack a bag. You’re going to stay at your Grandma’s house in the city for a few days."

"What about you?"

"I’m staying here to fix this," I told her, kissing her forehead.

Twenty minutes later, after dropping June off with my mother—who was horrified by the brief summary I gave her—I drove back home. The driveway was empty, but when I walked inside, the lights in the living room were off.

Mark was sitting in the dark on the sofa. The family photos were back on the walls, but in the dim light, their painted outlines looked like scars.

"Kristen called me," Mark said without looking up. "She said you threatened her."

"I told her I’d call the police," I replied, standing in the doorway. "And I meant it."

"If you call the police, Vance finds out," Mark said, turning his head to look at me. His eyes were wild. "Vance doesn't play by the rules, Nora. If he doesn't get his money by tomorrow afternoon, he’s not going to court. He’s going to make sure we lose everything. Kristen said she has three new kids lined up for tomorrow morning. That’s another thousand dollars cash."

"No," I said firmly. "No more kids. No more daycare. No more lies."

"You don't understand!" Mark stood up, walking toward me aggressively. "It’s my house too!"

"It’s registered under my family's trust, Mark!" I reminded him, stepping toward him without fear. "My parents put down the down payment! My name is first on the deed! You bring one more child into this house, and I will personally walk into the police station and hand them that ledger."

Mark stared at me, realization settling in that the quiet, dutiful wife he thought he could manipulate was gone.

Suddenly, the front doorbell rang.

It was 8:30 PM. Nobody knocked on our door at this hour.

Mark and I exchanged a terrified glance. I walked slowly to the front hallway and looked through the side window.

Standing on the porch was a tall man in a dark tailored suit, leaning casually against the railing. Beside him stood Kristen, looking triumphant.
