Chapter 7 - The Counter-Trap

"I was setting up an automated billing system," I replied without missing a beat, keeping my voice cool and professional. "If you're taking payments in cash, you're leaving a physical paper trail that any beat cop could trace. I'm building a shell invoice portal using crypto micro-transactions. It protects you—and it protects my house."
Vance stared at me for three agonizing seconds. Then, slowly, his thin lips stretched into an approving smile.
"Mark told me you were smart," Vance said, taking a sip of coffee. "He didn't tell me you were ruthless."
"I'm protecting my family," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "Which means I need total access to your secondary bank accounts to link the portal. Otherwise, the paper trail stops at my doorstep, and if I go down, the whole thing goes down."
Vance hesitated. He was a control freak, but greed was his fatal flaw. The prospect of laundering his illegal proceeds through an automated, un-traceable system was too tempting.
"I'll give you the routing numbers for the offshore account," Vance said. "By 5 PM today. But if I see a single irregularity, Mrs. Mercer... your daughter's school commute becomes very unsafe."
He turned and walked out the back door toward his black SUV parked in our alley.
I let out a long, shuddering breath. I had bought myself a few hours.
At noon, while the children were down for their naps, I called a secret meeting in the garage with Mark. I pulled him behind my car, out of sight of the security cameras Vance had installed on the porch.
"Listen to me very carefully," I whispered, holding his shoulders firmly. "Vance isn't just taking your money. He’s using our house to blackmail city officials. He has the building inspector and a tax commissioner using this daycare."
Mark’s eyes went wide. "What? No... Kristen said it was just local moms!"
"Kristen is helping him!" I hissed. "She’s his insider! Mark, you need to wake up. We are facing federal racketeering charges if the FBI busts this house. We will lose June. We will lose everything we've built for fifteen years."
Mark began to tremble, the reality of his cowardice finally crashing down on him. "What do we do, Nora? What can we do? He'll kill us if we go to the police!"
"Not if we hand the state prosecutor a slam-dunk case before Vance even knows he’s under investigation," I said. "I have the ledger. I have the video footage. Now I need the offshore banking info Vance is giving me at 5 PM."
"How can I help?" Mark asked, his voice cracked with genuine remorse.
"You need to distract Kristen," I told him. "At 4:30 PM, right before pickup, I need her away from the front room for twenty minutes so I can download Vance’s encrypted files from her laptop while he sends the wire codes."

"I'll do it," Mark promised, tears streaming down his face. "Nora... I'm so sorry. I am so, so sorry."
"Save your apologies for after we survive this," I said coldly.
