Chapter 9 - The Raid

Vance’s head snapped toward the front window. Red and blue police lights were already flashing through the curtains.

"You set me up," Vance snarled, drawing a sleek black handgun from his coat.

"Get down!" Mark screamed, throwing his body into Vance’s waist.

The two men crashed into the dining room table, shattering the wood. The gun spun out of Vance’s hand and skittered across the hardwood floor, stopping right at my feet.

Kristen shrieked and ran toward the back door, but the rear patio glass was suddenly kicked inward.

"POLICE! STATE INVESTIGATION! STAY DOWN!" armed officers in tactical gear flooded through the back entryway and front door simultaneously.

I dropped to my knees, pushing the gun away from me, my hands held high over my head.

"Secure the perimeter! Check the children!" an officer shouted.

Within seconds, Vance was pinned to the floor in handcuffs, cursing loudly. Mark was pressed against the wall, compliance hands raised, panting heavily. Kristen was caught in the backyard by two officers as she tried to hop the cedar fence.

A sharp-looking woman in a dark suit walked through the front door, showing her badge to the tactical team. It was Prosecutor FBI Special Agent Sarah Lin.

She walked over to where I was kneeling and offered me a hand up.

"Nora Mercer?" Agent Lin asked.

"Yes," I breathed, my heart hammering like a trapped bird.

"We received your encrypted data transmission thirty minutes ago," Agent Lin said, showing me her phone screen, which displayed the uploaded files from my cloud drive. "Your automated alert dispatched our unit directly to this location. You did good work, Mrs. Mercer."

I looked over at Mark. He was sitting on the floor, handcuffed, staring up at me with tears streaming down his face.

"Is my daughter safe?" I asked, ignoring everything else.

"She's with your mother at the precinct downtown," Agent Lin assured me. "She’s completely fine."

As officers began escorting Vance and Kristen out to the waiting squad cars, Agent Lin turned to Mark.

"Mark Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy, operating an illegal commercial enterprise, and child endangerment," she declared, reading him his rights.

Mark looked at me as they pulled him up. "Nora... please. Forgive me."

I stood straight, looking at the man who had traded our family's safety for his own pride.

"I saved your life today from Vance, Mark," I said, my voice echoing in the ruined room. "But our marriage died seven weeks ago."
