Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The hush in Northgate Mall did not shatter; it crystallized.
Every eye in the atrium swung between Noah’s outstretched finger, Hannah’s lime-green polyester collar, and the imposing figure of Gabriel Moretti. Gabriel stood motionless, his dark tailored coat cut like armor, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched beneath his olive skin. For fourteen months, pediatric neurologists, high-priced psychiatrists, and private tutors had walked out of his Gold Coast penthouse shaking their heads. Now, his boy had spoken four words—not to a doctor, not to his father, but to a seasonal worker wearing felt elf ears.
Before Hannah could pick up her dropped clipboard, Marcus "Tiny" Reed stepped forward, his eyes still rimmed red under his ridiculous green hat. With surprising gentleness, he lifted Noah from Santa’s lap and shielded him with his immense frame.
Gabriel didn’t glance at Santa. He didn’t glance at the whispering crowd. He walked directly toward Hannah.
With every stride he took, the noise of the mall seemed to die down. The man radiated absolute authority—the kind born not from shouting, but from the quiet reality that when he spoke, fortunes turned and dangerous men took cover.
Hannah backed up half a step until her shoulder blades hit the faux-brick wall of Santa’s Workshop. "Sir, I didn't mean to—"
"You're coming with me," Gabriel said. His voice was a low, resonant rumble that sent an involuntary shiver down her spine.
"Excuse me?" Hannah bristled, her innate stubbornness flaring through her shock. "I'm on the clock. And kidnapping is still a felony in Cook County."
Gabriel reached into his breast pocket, pulled out an embossed platinum card, and dropped it into her hand without looking at it. Then he signaled his aide, Calvin Shaw.
"Call mall management," Gabriel told Calvin coldly. "Buy out her seasonal contract. Effective thirty seconds ago."
"Wait just a minute!" Hannah protested, clutching the card. "You can't just buy a human being because your son made a holiday wish! I am a certified speech-language pathologist, not a Christmas decoration!"
Gabriel paused. For the first time, his dark, calculating gaze swept over her—taking in her fiery red hair, the stubborn lift of her chin, and the fierce intelligence burning behind her hazel eyes.
"You're a therapist?" Gabriel asked, his voice dangerously soft.
"Eight years of clinical experience," she retorted, crossing her arms over her curvy frame. "Specializing in severe childhood trauma and selective mutism. And I don't respond well to intimidation."

A faint, humorless smile touched Gabriel's lips. "Good. Because in my world, Miss Brooks, everyone else is too terrified to tell me the truth. You start tonight. Name your price."
