Chapter 5 - The Whisper in the Dark

The breakthrough happened on a snowy Tuesday night.

Hannah was curled up beside Noah on his bed, reading *The Polar Express* in her softest, most melodious voice. Noah’s head rested on her arm, his little eyelids growing heavy.

Outside, a blizzard hammered against the reinforced glass windows.

Hannah turned the final page. "The bell still rings for all who truly believe."

Noah reached up with a small, warm finger and touched the hollow of Hannah’s throat. She held her breath, not moving a muscle.

"Mama," Noah whispered.

The word was barely louder than a falling snowflake, but it hit Hannah like a thunderbolt. Tears instantly welled in her eyes. She swallowed the lump in her throat, gently kissing the boy's forehead. "I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm right here."

"Don't let the man with the snake take you," Noah whimpered, curling tighter into her side. "He broke Mommy's car."

Hannah went ice-cold. *The man with the snake.*

Before she could process what Noah had said, the penthouse lights abruptly plunged into pitch blackness.

The emergency generators did not kick in. The heavy electronic locks clicked open in sequence—a fail-safe override.

Down the hallway, the sharp, muffled *crack* of a silenced firearm shattered the silence.

"Noah, under the bed, right now!" Hannah commanded in a fierce, urgent whisper. She shoved him under the frame, tossing blankets over him, and grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand.

Footsteps moved with practiced stealth across the hardwood floor. A dark figure stepped into the nursery doorway, night-vision goggles glowing green.

Hannah didn't hesitate. She swung the heavy brass lamp with all her strength, catching the intruder squarely across the temple. The man stumbled with a grunt, his weapon clattering across the floor. But he recovered quickly, lunging for her.

Hannah fought like a lioness, scratching and striking, refusing to let him reach the bed. A gloved hand gripped her throat, slamming her back against the dresser.

Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed through the corridor. Gabriel materialized like an avenging demon from the darkness. With sheer, brutal force, he ripped the attacker off Hannah, drove him into the drywall, and snapped his wrist with a sickening crunch. The intruder collapsed unconscious.

Gabriel dropped to his knees in front of Hannah, pulling her violently into his arms. His heart was pounding like a war drum against her cheek.

"Are you hit? Did he hurt you?" he demanded, his voice shaking with terror he had never felt in his life.

"I'm okay... I'm okay," Hannah sobbed, clutching his coat. "Noah is under the bed. Gabriel—the intruder... Noah said the man who hurt his mother has a snake tattoo!"

Gabriel froze. His face went dead pale. "A cobra on the forearm?"

"He said 'the man with the snake'!"

Gabriel stood up, his jaw set in cold, lethal certainty. "Roman Vance."
