Chapter 2 - The Fortress on Lake Shore Drive

The Moretti penthouse did not look like a home; it looked like a high-tech fortress draped in Italian marble and bulletproof glass.

A sleek black town car had brought Hannah to the building thirty stories above the freezing expanse of Lake Michigan. Armed guards nodded in crisp deference as Gabriel swept through the private elevator foyer. Hannah, clutching her worn leather tote bag, took in the minimalist, monochrome interior. There were no family pictures, no vibrant toys strewn on the carpet, no warmth. Just cold perfection.

Noah ran past the marble kitchen island straight to the plush living room sofa. He didn’t sit; he stood behind the couch, peeking over the cushions, clutching his reindeer *Dasher*.

"He hasn't spoken in an enclosed room since October of last year," Gabriel said quietly, unbuttoning his overcoat and handing it to a butler who vanished instantly. "He will not look me in the eye. He doesn't laugh. He barely eats."

Hannah set her bag on an armchair and knelt down on the rug, lowering herself to Noah's eye level across the room. She didn’t look at Noah directly. Instead, she raised both hands to the sides of her head and wiggled her fingers like antlers.

Noah's eyes widened. He scrambled down from the sofa and cautiously stepped forward, placing his tiny hand directly over his heart: *Thank you.*

Gabriel went rigid behind her. "What was that? What did he just do?"

"We have a system," Hannah answered without turning around. "Reindeer sign language. He learned three signs on Wednesday. He remembered all of them."

"He never did that for Dr. Sterling," Gabriel murmured, something raw and vulnerable cracking through his icy facade.

"Because Dr. Sterling probably spent fifty minutes trying to force him to perform for a diagnostic checklist," Hannah said, turning her head to meet Gabriel's gaze. "Speech isn't a trick you teach a child like a dog, Mr. Moretti. It's a bridge of safety. When the world is too loud, silence is the only armor a six-year-old has."

Gabriel swallowed hard, his dark eyes searching hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. For an instant, the cold syndicate boss was gone, replaced by a father desperate to save his only son from drowning in the dark.

"Stay," Gabriel whispered, stepping closer. "Not as an elf. Not as a temporary aide. Move in. Be his clinician. Give him his voice back."

"Under one condition," Hannah said firmly, rising to her feet. "Inside these walls, you listen to me when it comes to his emotional health. No guards barking orders. No imposing schedules. And no intimidating me when I make a mess."

Gabriel extended his hand. His palm was rough, warm, and massive. "Deal."

May you like

When his fingers closed around hers, a jolt of pure electricity surged through her veins, signaling that entering Gabriel Moretti’s world would be far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
