Chapter 14 - The Broken Sister

Leaving Hannah's farm at dawn, I drove straight to the county courthouse in White Plains. If Douglas Sterling was mobilizing to claim that trust, I needed to preemptively freeze every asset tied to *Anchor & Ivy Holdings*.
Marcus Reynolds met me on the courthouse steps, clutching a thick leather briefcase. "I've filed an emergency motion for an injunction, Claire. But we have a wild card. Guess who showed up at my office an hour ago demanding to speak with you?"
I stopped dead on the granite stairs. "Who?"
"Brenda."
A surge of pure rage flashed through my veins. "Brenda? The woman who made my daughter weep in front of forty people? The woman who helped Julian forge bank statements? Why isn't she in jail?"
"Her probation officer authorized a travel waiver for legal consultation," Marcus said, lowering his voice. "She didn't come to gloat, Claire. She was terrified. She was practically shaking. She said Julian received a message inside Terre Haute that scared him so badly he went into voluntary solitary confinement. She wants to cut a deal."
Twenty minutes later, I was sitting across from my former sister-in-law in a soundproof consultation room on the second floor of the courthouse.
Brenda looked like a ghost of her former, glamorous self. Her designer blowout was replaced by brittle, unwashed hair pulled back into a messy clip. The gaudy designer jewelry was gone, replaced by a cheap plastic wristwatch. Her manicured nails were bitten to the quick.
When I sat down, she didn't look me in the eye. She kept her gaze fixed on the laminate table, her fingers twisting a crumpled paper napkin.
"You have five minutes, Brenda," I said, my voice dead and cold. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't have Marcus call your probation officer right now to report harassment."
"Because Douglas Sterling is going to kill Julian if that land isn't signed over," Brenda whispered, her voice cracked and raw.
I didn't blink. "Julian made his bed with Sterling years ago. He tried to ruin my life and emotionally destroy his own daughter for a cut of that money."
"You don't understand!" Brenda snapped, looking up with wild, bloodshot eyes. "Julian didn't plan the birthday party! He was following Sterling’s orders! Sterling told Julian that if we didn't have you declared an unfit mother before Emma's ninth birthday, he would release the loan defaults Julian signed under the table. Julian owed loan sharks connected to Sterling’s commercial projects over three million dollars!"
"So you decided to starve an eight-year-old child at her own party to save Julian's skin?" I leaned forward, my knuckles white against the edge of the table. "You screamed at Emma in front of all her classmates. You told her she wasn't allowed to eat. You humiliated a little girl who loved you!"
Tears spilled over Brenda’s sunken cheeks. "Sterling’s people were sitting in the banquet hall, Claire! The two men in suits at the corner table—the ones you thought were party venue supervisors—they weren't venue staff! They were Sterling’s private investigators! They had cameras in their lapels! Brenda was supposed to make a scene so the investigator could record your reaction when you blew up! If you attacked me, they were going to have you arrested for felony assault in front of forty minors!"
A chill traveled down my spine. I remembered that afternoon vividly. When Brenda had screamed at Emma, every instinct in my body had screamed at me to lunge across the banquet table and tear her apart. The only thing that had stopped me was Emma’s small hand reaching out, tugging on my coat, crying, *"Mommy, please don't fight."*
Emma’s innocence had saved me from falling directly into Sterling's legal snare.
"Why are you telling me this now, Brenda?" I demanded.
Brenda fumbled with her canvas purse and pulled out a small, tarnished brass key attached to a numbered plastic fob: *Vault 412, Hudson Valley Depository.*
"Sterling visited me two days ago," Brenda whispered, looking around the room as if the walls had ears. "He told me that since Julian failed, I had to finish the job. He wanted me to plant prescription narcotics in your townhouse and call an anonymous tip into Emma’s school. He said if I didn't do it, my probation would be revoked and I'd spend ten years in Bedford Hills."
"And you refused?"
"I’m a selfish bitch, Claire. I know that," Brenda sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I hated you because Julian always gave you the life I thought I deserved. But I can't do this anymore. Sterling isn't going to let any of us walk away alive. He’s going to take that land, develop the mega-resort he's been planning for a decade, and bury Arthur’s original will forever. That key belongs to Arthur's personal lockbox in Fishkill. Julian gave it to me before he was sentenced. Inside is the ledger Arthur kept on Sterling. If you bring that to the State Attorney General, it’s the only way Julian and I survive."
I stared at the brass key lying between us on the cold table.

"Take it," Brenda pleaded, pushing it toward me. "Take it and destroy him, Claire. Because if you don't, Sterling is going to take Emma."
